As a movie buff with a penchant for dramas that delve into real-life scandals, I am thrilled to hear about Toby Jones and David Tennant teaming up for a series based on the phone hacking scandal. Their combined acting prowess promises an engrossing exploration of this dark chapter in British history.
Toby Jones has announced that he’s joining forces with David Tennant for a fresh television production, focusing on the dramatic portrayal of the phone hacking controversy.
On September 11th, during a press conference, Jones announced the news following his victory at the National Television Awards where he was honored as Best Actor for his performance in Mr Bates vs the Post Office.
It hasn’t been verified anything else regarding the drama thus far, but earlier this year, The Cinemaholic announced that Tennant is slated to appear in Broken News. This drama, penned by Jack Thorne (Best Interests), is set for ITVX and offers a deep dive into the phone hacking scandal.
The report indicates that the production will be helmed by Lewis Arnold, focusing on the downfall of Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World, along with the subsequent investigation and apprehension of more than 100 individuals, culminating in the Leveson Inquiry.
Upon receiving the Best Actor award at the NTAs, Jones expressed, “This honor holds great significance for me, yet it extends beyond myself to the exceptional individuals who sparked our production’s creation. Some of these inspiring people are present here tonight.
In the film titled “Mr. Bates versus The Post Office,” Jones portrayed Alan Bates. This movie revolved around the Post Office scandal, ultimately leading to legislative action by the government aimed at rectifying the unjust convictions of postmasters and postmistresses who had been wrongly implicated.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that our beloved drama was honored with the Impact Award at the NTAs! This accolade highlights the profound influence our show has made in the real world since it first premiered.
Apart from clashing with the Post Office, like Mrs. Bates did, Jones has lately appeared in ITV’s The Long Shadow and also in the Apple TV+ movie titled The Instigators.
Last year, Tennant reappeared on Doctor Who, and he’s set to appear in Rivals and The Thursday Murder Club soon.
