As a long-time fan of EastEnders, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement and anticipation at Danny Dyer’s recent call for his character Mick Carter to return to the show. Having grown up with Mick and the rest of the Carter family, it feels like losing a dear friend when they left our screens at the end of 2022.
I’ve got to say, I’m absolutely thrilled by Danny Dyer’s recent statement! He’s ignited a spark of anticipation among EastEnders fans like myself, expressing his desire for his beloved character, Mick, to make a comeback on the show.
During the presentation of this year’s National Television Award for Best Drama, sharing the stage with Katherine Parkinson, Dyer paused to address the BBC soap opera cast members present, acknowledging their work on Mr Bates vs The Post Office, the show that won the award.
He said: “Just want to give a shout-out to my EastEnders family over there. I love you, I miss you – bring Mick back!”
Following their enthusiastic response, he turned to his fellow presenter and queried, “Should we consider inviting Mick again, Katherine?” To this, Parkinson inquired, “Who do you mean?
As a movie enthusiast, I must express my thoughts about the recent departure of Danny Dyer from his iconic role as Mick Carter on EastEnders. While this farewell might just be a hilarious skit at the NTAs for now, the fervent response from the crowd certainly hints at an insatiable yearning for Mick’s comeback. The energy in the room was palpable, and I can’t help but feel that there’s more to come from this beloved character.
In June, Dyer stated that he believed his character had passed away after his dramatic departure, mentioning, “Indeed, I see it as a compliment when people wish for my return.
Perhaps we might see a return if the story doesn’t end with resolution. A dream sequence, maybe? I highly doubt Mick would show up looking like he was drenched in seaweed!
Yet, he did express his thoughts about potentially reprising the role for the soap’s 40th anniversary, perhaps in a storyline where Linda is intoxicated or delusional, only to share a scene with Kellie Bright. This would also serve to put an end to questions about when he might return again.
During the publicity for his newly-renewed second season of the comedy show Mr. Bigstuff, Dyer expressed that he felt compelled to move on from EastEnders, and furthermore, that Mr. Bigstuff confirmed that he had chosen wisely in doing so.
“People said, ‘Oh he’ll be back, he won’t get more work’,” he said. “How wrong were they?”
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
