Despite no longer possessing an individual Olympic bronze medal, Jordan Chiles now treasures something else unique – a special memento given by none other than Flavor Flav.
At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, the rapper from Public Enemy said to the gymnast, “Jordan, I understand they tried to take your medal, but guess what? I’ve got something for you that nobody can take away.
Then, surprisingly, he fastened an extravagantly jeweled timepiece around her neck, prompting a bewildered shake of her head.
Wow,” remarked Jordan, taken aback by the impromptu speech. “I’m genuinely speechless! I can’t thank you enough,” (View the list of winners at the 2024 VMAs.)
With a flip of his hat and a swap for a 2024 Paris Olympics cap, along with a new pair of shades, he caught the crowd’s appreciation. She exclaimed, “He sure has style!
In response, he mentioned, “Indeed, everyone here is aware that I am an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic women’s water polo team. Therefore, let me make this a moment befitting the Olympics, Jordan, if you don’t mind?
But wait, there was more.
He leaned in, confidentially like, and added, “I got your prize money, too. I got that for you…I just wanted to surprise you with that. I didn’t want to say nothin’ to you backstage, but Jordan, you did your thing. Congratulations, you deserve everything.”
Jordan could only reply, “What an honor, Flav.”
Initially, she found herself nearly at a loss for words, but fortunately, it was time to announce the first award of the evening: The Best Collaboration went to Taylor Swift and Post Malone for their song, “Fortnight.
Following their gold medal win in the team event at the Paris Olympics alongside Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade McCrary, and Hezly Rivera, Jordan initially placed fifth in the floor exercise. However, due to an investigation into the scoring by the U.S. team, they were subsequently moved up to win the bronze position.
Nevertheless, the Romanian team, acting on behalf of gymnast Ana Barbosu who narrowly missed a medal spot due to her tumble, contested the call. Upon further examination, it was determined that the appeal was submitted beyond the allowed time for it to be considered valid.
And with that, she was no longer a bronze medalist.
In a post on her Instagram from August 15th, Jordan expressed that she was at a loss for words due to a difficult decision that felt unfair. This decision wasn’t easy for her alone, but for everyone who had supported and cheered her on throughout her journey.
But she’s still golden in Flavor Flav’s eyes.
