The history between these two titans of the ring is undeniable, and it’s a full-circle moment to witness their epic battle once more, especially on the 15th anniversary of their farewell matches in Ring of Honor.
Tonight’s AEW Dynamite episode shone the limelight on the AEW Grand Slam event, with several highly anticipated battles being announced for the schedule. Unexpectedly, the spotlight was also cast on the AEW World Championship, following Bryan Danielson’s brutal encounter with Jon Moxley last week that left him beaten and close to suffocation. With Darby Allin’s title match contract unveiled earlier in the show, many speculated a world title bout would be off the table. However, the unexpected happened, and fans are now eager for a long-awaited rematch between Danielson and Nigel McGuinness – a twist that nobody anticipated.
World Title Worthy
McGuinness stepped forward and wanted to share some updates, beginning with the disappointing news that Grand Slam wouldn’t feature a World Championship fight due to Danielson’s present condition. McGuinness expressed his happiness for Danielson, suggesting he was likely fighting for breath in an iron lung after the incident with Moxley. However, he felt this was unfortunate for AEW since a World Title match should be contested at such a significant event. Yet, he proposed a solution.
McGuinness held a sheet in his grasp, hesitating to unveil its contents initially. Instead, he reminisced about being sidelined for such a long time, watching Danilson excel in the career that was supposed to be his. Then, McGuinness mentioned Danilson’s apprehension towards him and hinted at the highly anticipated match between them. Furthermore, he asserted that Tony Khan is unafraid, recognizing an opportunity for a lucrative showdown when it presents itself.
McGuinness announced that Grand Slam will showcase a match between Danielson and himself for the AEW World Championship, but he didn’t stop there. Additionally, McGuinness shared that Oasis will play him to the ring, and he challenged Danielson: Will The Final Countdown be next or has the American Coward’s final match already occurred? He left the decision up to Danielson.
A Grand Rematch
Following Tony Khan’s announcement that the match will take place at Grand Slam, there’s uncertainty about Danielson’s condition due to his last appearance being on a stretcher. Recovery time is short, less than two weeks, so even if he’s improving, it might not be enough. Moreover, The BCC remains a threat and could launch another attack, potentially leading to a swift defeat for Danielson at Grand Slam.
In this upcoming rematch, McGuinness and Danielson are set to relive history, as they had their final matches in Ring of Honor during Glory By Honor VIII back in September 2009. Remarkably, this initial bout took place in New York, and coincidentally, on the 15th anniversary of that match, they will battle for the AEW World Title in New York again. This event brings a sense of closure, and it’s possible that their epic clash could be the highlight of Grand Slam.
