Rocky Horror star Mawaan Rizwan: ‘Stand-up is safer than theatre’

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I must admit that Mawaan Rizwan‘s decision to take on the role of the narrator in The Rocky Horror Show has piqued my interest significantly. His unique blend of comedy and music, as seen in his viral songs and appearances on shows like Taskmaster, seems perfectly suited for this iconic musical.

Instead of visualizing relaxation as sunbathing on white sandy beaches, or enduring the rain in typical English weather, renowned comedian Mawaan Rizwan offers an unusual perspective on it.

During his break from penning the second season of the BBC sitcom Juice, the performer has adorned his fanciest fishnet stockings and journeyed to London. At present, he’s gracing the stage for the first time on the West End in The Rocky Horror Show.

Being on television is truly an honor for me, yet I find that writing can be laborious and TV moves at a leisurely pace. The instantaneity of theater, however, is a relief, and I’m glad to have the opportunity to be part of it.

Beyond creating and acting in his own show, Rizwan is particularly recognized for participating in the 10th season of Taskmaster and for a string of popular comedic songs that have gone viral, such as “I’ve Never Been Skiing” and “Are You Checking Me out or Are You Just a Racist?”, among others.

This musical background has undoubtedly primed him for taking on the role of the narrator. “I’ve made music all my life. I made my first album when I was a teenager – which was terrible! – but I’ve always been musical in the way I’ve expressed myself.”

He further explained that agreeing to be part of the show was a straightforward decision – “I’ve long dreamed of participating in a musical, though I don’t consider myself a die-hard musical enthusiast. However, The Rocky Horror Show has always been an exception for me, so when I was offered the opportunity, my answer was swift and definite.

Despite his preparedness, Rizwan confessed that he felt significantly more anxious about singing rather than comedy. “Many people find stand-up comedy to be terrifying, but for me, making people laugh was the safer choice, and far less exposing than unveiling my vocal abilities by singing.

Performing songs on stage feels incredibly exposing to me, something I’ve long appreciated from a distance. Lately, I’ve dabbled in comedy tunes, and now, I find myself yearning to create some pleasant sounds!

I’ve noticed an intriguing overlap between my compositions and the iconic “Rocky Horror Show.” This musical is undeniably rebellious, a trait I strive to embody in my own creative endeavors.

“I love the subversive nature that comedy can give song writing.”

Regarding his forthcoming part, the humorist expressed excitement about consistently engaging with the audience throughout the performance, considering the high energy and fervor typically displayed by Rocky Horror enthusiasts.

I find nothing more rewarding than being on stage with an engaged audience, especially during a performance like The Rocky Horror Show. For me, it’s not just the actors who make the show; the audience is equally integral to the experience. That’s pure, unadulterated gold for any performer.
