As a lifelong Transformers fan, I can confidently say that “Transformers One” is more than meets the eye, and it’s not just because of the stunning CGI or the star-studded cast. This film takes us back to the roots of our beloved characters, giving us an origin story that breathes new life into the franchise.
Is “Transformers: One” more than just what we see on the surface? This groundbreaking computer-generated animated “Transformers” film, taking place on the planet Cybertron and set before the great war between Autobots and Decepticons, serves as an origin tale for the future comrades-in-arms Orion Pax (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry), who will eventually become leaders known as Optimus Prime and Megatron. However, does this new movie, releasing in theaters on September 20th, serve as a prequel to the live-action “Transformers” movies?
In a new twist, director Josh Cooley shared with ComicBook, “It was exciting to say, ‘Nothing’s been done yet.’ We’ve never approached it this way before.” Previously uncharted territory, the story will unfold with events such as a war between the Autobots and Deceptions, which ultimately leads them to Earth. This is a common element in Transformers narratives across all versions.
In this unique retelling, I find myself immersed in a world where the Transformers’ epic battle finally reaches our own planet, as portrayed in movies like the 2007’s “Transformers” and its prequel, the live-action “Bumblebee” of 2018. This fresh take on the Transformers story revisits events that have been depicted before across various platforms, such as the 1986 movie “Transformers: The Movie” and the ever-evolving Energon Universe.
What Cooley is eager about going forward is that we can retell the same story yet introduce some variations, much like our initial approach was unique. There are numerous threads that continue from before, making it a vast playground. So I believe it’s a prequel to similar events, but perhaps in the future they will unfold differently.
In a recent statement, franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who has been involved with every “Transformers” movie since 2007, mentioned that establishing a direct connection to the live-action movies would be challenging and complex. Di Bonaventura clarified that “Transformers One,” featuring Chris Hemsworth as the lead, will influence future “Transformers” films, even though it may exist in a different timeline.
