Ant & Dec hint some characters will return to Byker Grove reboot

As a seasoned viewer of British television with memories of Byker Grove etched deeply into my childhood, I must say the announcement of its reboot has me both nostalgic and eager for the new series titled “Byker.” Ant & Dec’s return to the small screen in this drama is a welcome delight, considering their undeniable charm and knack for winning those National Television Awards.

Exciting news! It looks like we’re getting a revival of the beloved Byker Grove show that originally aired on the BBC and ended in 2006. Stay tuned for more details about its upcoming release!

Ever since that momentous occasion, naturally, Ant and Dec have ascended to become familiar faces in every household and graced the hosting duties for numerous shows. More recently, they added another National Television Award to their impressive collection, outshining notable contenders such as Alison Hammond, Stacey Solomon, Bradley Walsh, and Claudia Winkleman in the TV presenter category. As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I eagerly await their next venture on our screens!

As an eager fan, I’m thrilled to share that Dec has unveiled exciting news about an upcoming series titled “Byker”. While we’re deep into the creative process, it turns out that crafting a drama is more involved than we anticipated, given our background in live television. We’re currently engrossed in developing the storyline and fleshing out the characters for this project.

Dec went on: “The journey has been lengthy yet delightful. We’ve been discussing plotlines and characters, deciding who returns and when, imagining their past and present. It’s turned out to be incredibly intriguing.

Ant also added: “And no, we’re not going to write ourselves into it just for the sake of it.”

Couldn’t it be possible that PJ and Duncan show up unexpectedly? Ant suggested, “Yes, under the right circumstances, if the writers believe we are capable enough, then perhaps they will.

Sure, let me rephrase that for you: The show is centered around a group of young people whose lives were tied to a youth center in Newcastle. In 2023, when the news about the series’ reboot came out, Lyndyann Barrass shared that if given the chance to reprise her character as Kirsty ‘Spuggy’ Campbell, she would seize it immediately.

As for who else in the original cast would be keen to return, we’ll just have to wait and see.

At last year’s NTA’s, the pair reacted to the internet-breaking news of Byker Grove’s return.

Dec stated: “The response we’ve received online and at the announcement has made us realize, ‘Oh my, we need to be extremely cautious about what we do because it affects everyone!’ It’s not just our program; it belongs to everyone. Everyone is invested in it and everyone watches it.

During that time, Dec also confessed they were slightly intrigued by the idea of making a guest appearance in the upcoming show, followed by: “Initially, when we first discussed it, we pondered, ‘What would PJ and Duncan be doing now… at their mid-40s?’ PJ relocated and Duncan went to college… I was just imagining that scenario!

I’d love to find out more about those characters’ actions and whether they’ll encounter each other again. After all, anything can happen!
