As a longtime wrestling enthusiast with an eye for talent and a knack for spotting comeback stories, I can’t help but feel a sense of intrigue when it comes to Matt Riddle’s future in the world of professional wrestling. His life experience, marked by a tumultuous journey from UFC fighter to WWE superstar, has only added fuel to the fire that is his enigmatic persona.
After parting ways with the WWE in late 2023 due to a contentious airport incident and past infractions related to their wellness policy, Matt Riddle has been actively involved in professional wrestling. Known as “The King of Bros,” he made his comeback to the ring in January, competing for organizations such as MLW and New Japan Pro Wrestling. During this time, he also claimed the NJPW World Television Championship. This expanded involvement in the wrestling scene can be attributed to his departure from WWE.
Matt Riddle Reveals Conversation With AEW’s Tony Khan
Despite having wrestled 41 times since departing from WWE, the definitive long-term wrestling career of Matt Riddle remains undetermined.
In a chat with SI’s The Takedown, Riddle disclosed that he conversed with the head of AEW (All Elite Wrestling), Tony Khan, during the early part of this year.
It’s possible I could appear on an AEW channel or broadcast in the near future, though it might not happen. Time will tell if Tony (Khan) likes me or not. From our conversation, he seemed pleased and relaxed. However, I can’t say for sure. When we met, I was quite sarcastic. During our encounter, I jokingly asked him about a match I had against Zack Sabre Jr., but in a different way. He looked puzzled, so I quickly changed the subject and moved on. That was my interaction with him.
Bringing substantial expertise to All Elite Wrestling, the ex-UFC contender has proven himself as one of the most promising independent wrestling stars during the mid-2010s. Impressive performances in companies like Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and EVOLVE caught everyone’s attention. He joined WWE towards the end of 2018, excelling on the NXT brand before moving to the main roster. Here, he achieved his greatest victories, primarily through a tag team partnership with Randy Orton and a fierce rivalry with Seth Rollins.
When he wasn’t engaged with major storylines, Riddle’s past issues started to surface again. Two months following his conflict with Rollins, Riddle was suspended for breaching the WWE’s wellness rules for the second occasion. He was compelled to attend a required rehabilitation program to stay within the company. Riddle made his ring comeback in April 2023 but only lasted five months before being let go by WWE in September of the same year.
Reflecting on my experiences, I must admit that being let go by WWE has brought me some relief. Being a controversial character on television meant everything was amplified due to the public eye, and the stress of working multiple days a week on TV became too much. I thrive under pressure and stress, but it was excessive in this situation. So, I decided to switch to AEW for better pay and a more manageable schedule. I no longer wished to work on television again, nor did I crave the attention temporarily. Instead, I wanted to take a step back and focus on independent wrestling events.
