Elden Ring Players in Disbelief Over New Stats: "People Actually Die to These?"

As a seasoned Elden Ring gamer with countless hours under my belt, I can’t help but chuckle at the latest statistical revelation that has left our gaming community in a state of disbelief. The Spirit Eels, those seemingly harmless, blue worm-like creatures, have managed to claim the lives of nearly 300,000 players!

As an enthusiastic Elden Ring player, I’ve often found myself sharing interesting stats and visuals from Bandai Namco and FromSoftware. It’s common knowledge that these insights cover preferred spells, incantations, weapons, and battles against formidable bosses. However, the recent data drop has left us players in a bit of a surprise. The focus here is on the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, where an enemy I thought was just for laughs, seems to have outsmarted many of us.

The infographic from Bandai Namco that’s been the talk of the Elden Ring community this week again ranks the most used spells and incantations from Shadow of the Erdtree, but above those rankings is a graphic showing the infamous Spirit Eel itself. These creatures are the slender, blue, worm-like beings that protrude out of the ground with tiny little arms and three holes on their head that loosely resemble a shocked face. They’re seen throughout the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and are often just hanging out and minding their own business, unless you mess with them, of course.

It seems that over 289,000 players of Elden Ring have encountered and unfortunately met their match with the Spirit Eels, resulting in 289,116 confirmed deaths. Given that the count must have been capped at some point for the results to be compiled, it’s likely that we’re now closer to 300,000 players who have lost to these slippery adversaries.

Indeed, some Spirit Eels are aggressive by nature and will attack you if you approach them. These can be identified as they are red with an angry appearance, making them simple to avoid. Aggressively striking a blue one will cause it to transform into the more hostile, red state that some tend towards. If you happen to engage in a fight with one accidentally, you can simply walk away from them since they’re immobile and not worth fighting due to the small amount of Runes they offer. It appears that certain players were intent on provoking them, and unfortunately, those who did so suffered the consequences.

One Elden Ring player, echoing many others, exclaimed in surprise, “I didn’t realize one could die from these [characters or enemies] in Elden Ring,” upon seeing the statistics posted on the subreddit for discussion.

Others expressed astonishment in much the same way, questioning how individuals could perish at the hands of these Spirit Eels. Admittedly, the number of fatalities might seem insignificant compared to the high toll inflicted by adversaries like Promised Consort Radahn. However, the graphic focusing solely on the Spirit Eel suggests that someone within FromSoftware found this amusing or knew players would find it humorous. Given that the full graphic only displays the Spirit Eel and no related data concerning player deaths, this graphic serves as a reminder to avoid annoying the Spirit Eels and becoming another statistic.
