As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s seen his fair share of gangster dramas, let me tell you, the opening episode of Tulsa King season 2 is a thrilling ride that leaves no room for complacency. The arrival of Cal Thresher and Bill Bevilacqua is akin to throwing gasoline on a smoldering fire – it’s going to get hotter, messier, and more explosive.
Warning: Contains spoilers for Tulsa King season 2 episode 1.
In the first season of Tulsa King, Dwight Manfredi was juggling numerous tasks, and this intense pace continues in the series’ second installment, as it maintains its blend of crime and humor.
After the General’s detention at the start of his bar/casino grand opening, orchestrated by FBI agent Stacy Beale, he has been granted a high-valued $3 million bail. This implies that he must maintain impeccable conduct, at least on the surface.
However, it won’t be simple with the addition of not just one, but two new competitors, as they’re likely to pull him into a fierce competition that could jeopardize not only Dwight and his domain, but also those he holds dear.
In the initial episode of season 2, the character encounters Cal Thresher, portrayed by Neal McDonough, during a fundraising event that Margaret Devereaux, the ranch owner, organized. (Desperate Housewives, Arrow)
Initially, the character was portrayed as a highly dominant and fiercely protective business figure from Tulsa. This description proved accurate as he demonstrated this behavior during the tense confrontation.
When Dwight shared with Cal his plans to grow his business and mentioned that competition is “beneficial”, Cal responded defensively.
He commented, “It really depends on whom you’re competing against. If it’s someone less suitable, then the challenge might be quite steep.
Later on, Cal gave him a direct warning: “I don’t mean to be impolite, but it seems wise for you to stick to your own path, no matter what it may be.
“Is there a problem?” asked Dwight.
“There wasn’t, until there was,” he snarled.
Hear that noise? That’s the drums of war being dusted off and taken out of storage once more.
Once Dwight and the team had left, Cal phoned up Kansas City gangster Bill Bevilacqua (played by Frank Grillo in Captain America) for a quick heads-up regarding Dwight’s departure.
He’s taking care of everything you just explained about The General’s business, isn’t he?” or simply “Is Manfredi handling all that about The General’s business?
“I thought this was your territory?” he responded, spikily.
After their discussion, it’s clear that Bill is carefully considering his options regarding this specific challenge, and estimating its potential expense.
He’s incredibly grateful to be involved in all the fantastic work that Taylor Sheridan, as creator, and David Glasser, as executive producer, have accomplished, he mentioned further.
“Yellowstone was an awesome hit for me, but there’s something about Cal Thresher and Tulsa King that is just a little bit closer to me, way more than Malcolm Beck.
Malcolm Beck seems insignificant, but Cal Thresher, there’s something genuinely appealing about him, and I believe the audience will feel the same way.
