Tito Jackson, Jackson 5 singer and brother of Michael Jackson, dies aged 70

As a child of the 70s, I have fond memories of grooving to the rhythmic beats of the Jackson 5 and The Jacksons. Tito Jackson was more than just a member of these legendary groups; he was an integral part of their soulful sound, providing the perfect blend of guitar and backing vocals that made their music timeless.

It’s with sadness that I share the news: Tito Jackson, part of the legendary band The Jackson 5 and the sibling of the renowned Michael Jackson, passed away at the age of 70.

The formal reason for Michael Jackson’s passing hasn’t been disclosed yet, however, after various media outlets reported his death, his children Taj, Taryll, and TJ verified the news through Instagram posts.

In a post made by all three members, they expressed: “With great sorrow, we inform you that our cherished father, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson, has passed away. We are staggered, disheartened, and deeply grieving. Our dad was an exceptional individual who showed concern for everyone’s well-being.

A few of you might recognize him as Tito Jackson from the iconic Jackson 5, others may know him as ‘Coach Tito’ or ‘Poppa T.’ Regardless, he will be deeply missed. We’ll always cherish ‘Tito Time.’ Let’s remember our father’s teachings – ‘Love One Another.’ With all our hearts, we say goodbye, Pops. Your sons, Taj, Taryll, and TJ.

Born in October 1953, Jackson is the third oldest child among Joe and Katherine Jackson’s ten offspring. He started performing with his siblings, namely Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and the legendary Michael, as part of the Jackson 5 band, which later transformed into The Jacksons, beginning their journey in the music industry from 1964 onwards.

This musical collective achieved global success with tunes like ABC, The Love You Save, and I Want You Back. They have collectively sold over 150 million records worldwide, with Jackson contributing on guitar and backup vocals. Additionally, he embarked on a solo journey in the blues genre since 2003.

Recently, he along with the team gave their last performance on the 10th of September. Just four days ago, Jackson shared a picture and message on Instagram while paying tribute to his late brother Michael at a memorial site in Munich.

He said: “Before our show in Munich, my brothers Jackie, Marlon, and I, visited the beautiful memorial dedicated to our beloved brother, Michael Jackson. We’re deeply grateful for this special place that honors not only his memory but also our shared legacy. Thank you for keeping his spirit alive.”

In 1980, the Jackson family received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, while they were officially recognized and enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Expressing condolences that have been shared regarding Jackson, former drummer for the Jackson 5, Jonathan ‘Sugarfoot’ Moffett wrote on Facebook: “A deep sorrow fills me tonight in mind, spirit, and emotions. My wife and I had to leave a movie theater a moment ago after receiving a text from a dear friend informing us that my heart and soul brother, Tito Jackson, has just passed away.

I’m utterly shocked and heartbroken to learn such distressing news about Tito, who feels more like a cherished brother to me. I’m left feeling stunned and disheartened. May God and Jesus Christ embrace his soul and spirit with open arms, leading him gently into the gates of Heaven.

As a film enthusiast, I’m deeply saddened to share that my family, a close-knit group, is left to carry on without our beloved Jackson. His legacy lives on in the strong bond we share, forged by his three sisters, four brothers, and our ever-loving mother Katherine. Additionally, he leaves behind three remarkable sons, who are now graced with nine little mirrors of their father’s spirit.
