Baby Reindeer is ‘Richard Gadd’s true story’, says Netflix boss amid lawsuit

Baby Reindeer is ‘Richard Gadd’s true story’, says Netflix boss amid lawsuit

As a supporter of the arts and someone who values storytelling that brings about meaningful change, I wholeheartedly stand behind “Baby Reindeer”. The series, with its four Emmy Awards, is a testament to the power of art and the impact it can have on audiences worldwide. Richard Gadd’s performance is truly remarkable, and his writing deserves recognition for its depth and courage.

The Netflix drama series Baby Reindeer remains a massive success for the streaming platform, having garnered four Emmy Awards: Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Writing for Richard Gadd, Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor for Gadd himself, and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Jessica Gunning.

Yet, the show continues to spark controversy, given that it’s involved in a defamation case filed by Fiona Harvey. She alleges that she is the true inspiration behind Martha, the character portrayed by Gunning.

In light of the ongoing court case, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has once more expressed his pride for the series, as well as the manner in which Richard told the story.

The show carried a “based on real events” tagline, and Sarandos stated: “There was no intention to misuse the label carelessly. That’s truly Richard’s account of events.

It seems clear that some aspects of what you’ve been seeing on TV must have been exaggerated or fictionalized. I find it surprising that this is still up for discussion.

After receiving his Emmys, Gadd commented about the discussions surrounding the series, saying: “In today’s world, it’s simpler to zero in on the negative aspects. However, one should consider the impact that Baby Reindeer has made across the globe instead.

Wondering about the global reach, approximately how many people have seen this show? It’s around 80 million in total, and specifically on Netflix, about 20 million have watched it.

“The impact it’s made on countless lives is significant. In the UK alone, charities have seen an 80% rise in donations for organizations dealing with sexual abuse, with over half attributing this increase to Baby Reindeer. Yet, the discussion around this is surprisingly absent. Globally, this show has achieved extraordinary feats for so many people, and I wholeheartedly support that claim.

In July, Gadd submitted a 21-page declaration to federal court in the USA, backing Netflix in Harvey’s suit for $170 million.

In his statement, Gadd clarifies that he did not intend for any character in the Series to be identified as Martha Scott, specifically not Fiona Harvey. He further explains that Martha Scott is a completely fictitious character, distinct from Harvey, with her own unique and divergent personality traits, unlike those of Harvey.

The statement went on to say: “I was taken aback to see Harvey on Piers Morgan Uncensored. While I’ve only caught a few episodes, it seems she stated that she was the basis for the Martha character, and that she never sent me numerous emails or voicemails.

For quite a while, she persistently bothered and followed me, and following her interview, various people have reached out to me via my representatives and publicists, sharing that they too had been harassed by Harvey. However, they were all too fearful of her to speak up publicly about it.

According to the lawsuit filed by Harvey, the defendants spread false information about him to more than 50 million individuals globally. This misinformation includes claims that Harvey is a two-time stalker who received a five-year prison sentence, and allegations that he sexually assaulted Gadd.

Defendants continued to tell untruths as they found it more appealing and profitable to spin a captivating tale rather than reveal the facts.
