The Wives’ Jo Joyner teases “pivotal event” – and a discovery “too close to home”

As a seasoned movie-goer who has seen more than my fair share of dramas and mysteries, I must say that The Wives, airing tonight on Channel 5, promises to be a gripping addition to the genre. With an impressive cast led by Jo Joyner, Angela Griffin, and Tamzin Outhwaite, this series looks set to deliver a compelling tale of family dynamics, obsession, and the search for truth.

Tonight (Monday, 16th September), the new Channel 5 drama “The Wives” begins airing, featuring Jo Joyner, Angela Griffin, and Tamzin Outhwaite as three sisters-in-law. The story revolves around their investigation into the disappearance of a fourth sister-in-law, Annabelle (Christine Bottomley).

Recently, Joyner shared insights into the upcoming series, revealing details about her character Beth and audience expectations. She discussed how other family members perceive her relentless pursuit of Annabelle’s whereabouts.

Initially, she’s operating independently, convinced that Annabelle’s disappearance involves something more, as Joyner clarified. However, in the third episode, there’s a crucial incident that impacts the three women profoundly, with a revelation hitting uncomfortably close to home. At this juncture, Beth becomes so frightened by what they uncover that she decides to halt their investigation.

Later on, Beth switches into high gear – you can see a hint of Monica from Friends in her personality. She thrives when it comes to organizing and planning events, so she decides to throw Sylvie a birthday party as a means to divert her focus and vitality away from potential discoveries.

As I watched further, it was my turn to be captivated as Natasha and Sylvie took over, sensing perhaps a hint of truth in Beth’s theory. In due time, they joined forces with her to unravel the mystery that had unfolded.

The series comes from creator and writer Helen Black (Time), who cited Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel Rebecca as an inspiration for the show.

Black remarked, “Though his former spouse is praised so highly, almost like an angel, it’s intriguing that he swiftly moves on to another partner, raising some eyebrows.

An intriguing pattern I’ve noticed is the stage of life where some friends become divorced or lose their spouse, only for a new companion to enter their social group.

The story continues with Beth and the entire Morgan clan returning to their vacation homes in Malta a year after Anabelle’s mysterious disappearance on the island.

The Wives starts Monday 16th September at 9pm on Channel 5.
