PS6 Will Use an AMD Chip and Feature Backward Compatibility – Rumour

As a seasoned gamer with decades of console wars under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and skepticism upon hearing rumors about the PlayStation 6. Having grown up with the PS1, witnessed the evolution through the PS2, 3, and 4, and now embracing the power of the PS5, I’ve learned to take such announcements with a grain of salt.

It appears that while Sony has just unveiled an upgraded version of their current consoles called the PS5 Pro, there’s been a hint of early information leaking about the upcoming PlayStation 6.

A recently released article by Reuters suggests that Sony is currently developing the PS6, and it’s expected to incorporate an AMD processor, much like its predecessors, the PS4 and PS5. The report indicates that Sony held extensive talks with several chip suppliers, ultimately narrowing down their options to Intel and AMD as the most likely candidates.

By 2022, the choice was made to persist with the latter option, as Sony opted to emphasize backward compatibility. During negotiations with Intel, it became clear that achieving backward compatibility with previous-generation consoles while using an Intel chip instead of AMD would be financially burdensome and resource-intensive. Additionally, disputes over profit distribution were a significant factor in the breakdown of discussions between Sony and Intel.

According to comments made to Reuters, Intel firmly disagrees with this portrayal but won’t discuss ongoing or prospective talks with clients. They currently possess a robust client base for both their product and manufacturing divisions, and their main focus is on innovation to fulfill these clients’ requirements.

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) will be celebrating its fourth birthday this November, implying it’s nearing the halfway point in its life cycle. Given that work on Sony’s upcoming console is already in progress, this timing aligns well, particularly since rumors suggest Sony aims to launch their next-gen console around 2028.
