As a long-time collector and preservationist of video games, I am thrilled to hear that the physical release of Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection on Nintendo Switch will indeed come with a game card. The controversy surrounding “code in a box” releases has been a sore point for many of us who value the tactile experience of owning a physical copy of a game, and I am relieved that North American fans won’t have to deal with this issue.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics has been digitally launched on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch recently, yet many are waiting another two months. This is due to the fact that the game’s actual physical version won’t hit stores until November 22nd. Many prefer physical editions, especially avid video game collectors and those concerned with game preservation. However, some fans began expressing worry last week upon hearing rumors that the Nintendo Switch version might just be a “cardboard box with a code” release – meaning the only difference between the physical and digital versions would be the physical case.
It appears that, fortunately, the situation won’t mirror the European release, at least in North America. As @Wario64 reports, the physical Switch version will come with a game card. In contrast, it seems there might be an issue with the European release, but the details remain unclear. This news has many North American fans feeling relieved. Over the past few years, “code in a box” releases on Switch have been contentious, often criticized for being unnecessary and wasteful plastic. While they can be useful for gift-giving, the Switch community generally dislikes them.
Despite claims from some video game collectors that physical copies are obsolete, the release of “Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection” demonstrates their continuing relevance. Previous Marvel vs. Capcom collections, like the 2012 “Marvel vs. Capcom Origins”, have been withdrawn from sale over time. When games are delisted, they can still be played by those who bought them initially, but it becomes difficult to acquire them secondhand. The shutdown of digital storefronts raises concerns about what will happen to these games. Having a physical copy ensures that you’re protected against the potential loss when online stores close down.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but get excited about the tangible version of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, and one of the reasons for my enthusiasm is the inclusion of an exclusive comic book! Although details are scarce at the moment, the cover art for this comic has been unveiled, and it was skillfully crafted by renowned Marvel artist Todd Nauck. However, it’s yet to be confirmed if he’ll also bring his artistic brilliance to the interior pages of the issue.
