As a lifelong Marvel fan who’s seen more than my fair share of comic book movies, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation when it comes to Tim Blake Nelson’s return as The Leader in Captain America: Brave New World. The character has been a tantalizing enigma since his brief appearance in The Incredible Hulk back in 2008, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting his big debut ever since.
Tim Blake Nelson, famous for playing The Incredible Hulk’s character, expressed his initial disappointment when it seemed he wouldn’t reprise his role as The Leader, but is now grateful for the delay of 16 years because it added complexity to the character. Protracted rights complications with the Hulk franchise prevented Marvel Studios from immediately following up with a sequel that would have introduced Nelson’s character, leaving his character and other supporting cast members in a holding pattern within the MCU for years. However, Tim Blake Nelson is now set to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World,” where his character, Samuel Sterns, will be unveiled as The Leader – one of Marvel’s most formidable and sinister antagonists.
2008’s Incredible Hulk finale revealed that a drop of Bruce Banner’s gamma-enhanced blood, spilled on Sterns, triggered his transformation into a gamma-intelligent being. Since then, we don’t know what’s become of Sterns – not even the promotional materials for Captain America: Brave New World have hinted at his current appearance or his plans within the MCU, as numerous groups fight for control.
In his own words, Nelson hinted that “The Marvel team has devised an intriguing reason – or should I say revelation – for what he’s been doing for the past 16 years and why.” Despite the mystery surrounding The Leader’s storyline in the MCU, it is evident that the antagonist will set a carefully crafted scheme into action during Captain America: Brave New World. However, the final goal of this plan remains unclear.
What The Leader’s Role In Captain America: Brave New World Could Mean For the MCU
In Captain America 4’s narrative, it appears that Captain America/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) unwittingly triggers a new arms race by retrieving a sample of the metal Adamantium from the remains of a Celestial that expired during childbirth in Marvel’s Eternals. As Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross strives to solidify his presidency on principles of global unity and prosperity, an unknown force starts stirring up turmoil – and this mysterious instigator could very well be The Leader.
So far, details of The Leader’s plan arguably include all of the following:
- Brainwashing former super-soldier Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumby) into committing an assassination attempt or some kind of disruptive act of terrorism against the government.
- Injecting President Ross with the gamma-radiation serum that transforms him into Red Hulk.
- Coordinating with or employing organizations like the Serpent Society to carry out the violent attacks and/or heists associated with his plan.
That’s a lot of moving pieces – but what’s the end goal?
What Is The Leader’s Master Plan for the MCU?
Since the announcement of Captain America 4, there’s been a lot of buzz among fans that this movie could be another major turning point like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with its shocking revelation about Hydra and the downfall of SHIELD. This time, it’s thought that the villain, The Leader, might be working to establish a new age of supervillains by boosting or upgrading certain individuals and organizations to alter the world’s power dynamics. That’s where the title of the film comes from. Some theories even suggest that The Leader could create new gamma and/or super-serum powerhouses; improve the technology of criminals and gangsters to usher in a new era of street-level supervillains; or perhaps trigger a mutation wave affecting the X-Men universe. Given The Leader’s genius, it could be any or all of these possibilities.
In summary, at this stage, we can only guess what The Leader aims to achieve through such intricate plotting within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Multiverse Saga” narrative. The upcoming film “Brave New World” may provide some answers, as it seems to directly tie into the forthcoming “Thunderbolts.” Preview footage suggests that the Thunderbolts team will undertake a mission at a facility harboring a potential game-changer for the MCU. If this is part of The Leader’s grand scheme, we may soon witness this villain becoming a significant antagonist, influencing various films and TV series within the Marvel universe.
