As a die-hard X-Men fan who grew up reading the original Inferno comics, I can hardly contain my excitement over Diamond Select Toys’ upcoming Minimates set! While it may not have been one of Marvel’s most iconic crossover stories back in the day, its influence and impact are undeniable.
Diamond Select Toys has given ComicBook an exclusive sneak peek at their upcoming X-Men: Inferno Minimates collection. The 1989 crossover event, which spanned Marvel’s X-Men titles like Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, X-Terminators, Excalibur, and The New Mutants, saw mutants battling against Mister Sinister and the villainous transformations of Madelyne Pryor as the Goblin Queen and Illyana Rasputin/Magik as Darkchylde. This upcoming set features these three villains, as well as a possessed Wolverine and a duo of demons – Darkchylde’s full demon form and N’Astirh – who played significant roles in the original storyline.
Initially, this particular crossover event performed well when it was released, but it never attained the level of legendary status among Marvel’s many iconic crossover narratives. Despite this, following a link to the 2015 “Secret Wars,” the story made a return in the year 2021.
In a particular spin-off from the Spider-Man comics, my character, Jason Macendale, was turned into the Hobgoblin. However, unlike his counterparts in those stories, he doesn’t show up here (probably because he’s already got a bunch of cool collectibles, while this is the sole location to snag the demonized Magik).
The narrative was penned by a star-studded team of Marvel creatives from the 1980s and ’90s, such as Louise Simonson, Chris Claremont, Marc Silvestri, Jon Bogdanove, Walter Simonson, Ann Nocenti, Gerry Conway, and several others.
