What you need to know

  • Electronic Arts developer DICE is currently working on the next Battlefield game.
  • During Electronic Arts’ Investor Day 2024 presentation, the company confirmed that Criterion, Motive, and Ripple Effect would be assisting with the game’s development.
  • The next Battefield will return to the modern era, the same setting for Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4.

As a seasoned Battlefield enthusiast with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about Electronic Arts’ upcoming project. The announcement that DICE, Criterion, Motive, and Ripple Effect are collaborating on the next installment in this iconic series brings a sense of nostalgia, reminding me of the thrilling battles I experienced in Battlefield 3 and 4.

The next big Electronic Arts (EA) shooter will again be a joint effort.

During EA’s Investor Day 2024 presentation, Byron Beede, head of Battlefield, shared that DICE is taking the front line in developing multiplayer aspects of their games. Meanwhile, Criterion Games, recognized primarily for the Burnout and Need for Speed series, are lending a hand with both single-player and multiplayer projects, having previously collaborated with DICE on Battlefront and Battlefield.

The studio responsible for the Dead Space remake, Motive Studio, which is now developing an Iron Man video game, is moving forward with creating the next installment of Battlefield’s single-player experience. Meanwhile, the team previously known as DICE LA, now called Ripple Effect, is focusing on a brand-new mode for an unspecified project.

Beede explains that the teams have been playing the next Battlefield for over a year, with internal playtests also bringing in outside players. This Battlefield game is set in the modern era, hearkening back to the style of games like Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4.

In the development of the latest installment, Battlefield 2042, DICE teamed up with Criterion Games, Ripple Effect, and EA Gothenburg to ensure a successful collaboration on this ambitious project.

From the perspective of an enthusiastic gamer, here’s how I might put it: With each new Battlefield release looming, Electronic Arts finds itself reeling from a series of shelved projects and closed game development studios in its wake.

In the year 2023, Electronic Arts (EA) closed down its development studio, Industrial Toys, putting an end to their planned Battlefield Mobile project. Later in the same year, approximately 500 employees were let go, with 50 of them being from BioWare.

In early 2024, Electronic Arts (EA) made significant cuts, dismissing approximately 670 employees companywide. This decision led to the termination of a first-person Star Wars shooter project that Respawn Entertainment had been developing. Additionally, EA shut down Ridgeline Games, a studio established in 2022 with the aim of creating single-player, narrative-focused games within the Battlefield universe.

Electronic Arts (EA) has high expectations for several upcoming ventures, one of which is BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, planned for release on October 30, 2024, in time for Halloween. Additionally, Respawn Entertainment is developing a third game that will serve as the finale to a trilogy following Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
