Gilmore Girls’ Lauren Graham Surprises Kelly Bishop in Sweet Reunion

As a dedicated Gilmore Girls fan for many years, I’ve been captivated by the intricate dynamics of the show and its characters. The complex relationship between Lorelai and Luke, portrayed by Lauren Graham and Scott Patterson, was one of the most compelling aspects of the series. However, it was heartening to learn that their off-screen friendship seemed unaffected by the on-screen drama.

A mother-daughter reunion.

Fans of Gilmore Girls had a fantastic experience at Kelly Bishop’s inaugural event to launch her memoir, titled “The Third Gilmore Girl,” which took place on September 17th.

As an overjoyed fan myself, let me share this exciting moment: I was there in New York City, where a venerable actress, famously known for her role as Emily Gilmore, graced a talk. Yet, it wasn’t just her appearance that sent fans into a frenzy; it was the unexpected interlocutor who took center stage. My on-screen mom, Lauren Graham – she who brought Lorelai Gilmore to life – captivated the audience as she assumed the role of the evening’s host.

The duo, both starring throughout all seven seasons of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s popular series and its 2016 Netflix revival titled “A Year in the Life,” flashed broad grins as they shared a stage.

On Friday night, Bishop donned a stylish outfit consisting of high-waisted black pants and a crisp white satin blouse, while Graham opted for a glittering black sequin skirt and a cozy black cardigan.

Previously, Bishop shared with TopMob News that she maintains a fairly regular connection with him. They are quite close, she emphasized.

Graham, with several memoirs under his belt as well as a novel, offered advice to Bishop regarding his upcoming book tour.

The “Dirty Dancing” star recently revealed that they had a conversation about book tours and related topics just yesterday. They spoke highly of the individual, praising their intelligence and extensive experience in this field. This has made them very at ease with the situation, and the star expressed great pride in them. They believe the person is an exceptional writer, brilliant, and full of ideas.

Despite not regularly attending Friday Night Dinners or lunch at Luke’s, Bishop revealed that she, along with Graham (age 57), occasionally get together with Sherman-Palladino for a special gathering – a dream come true for any Gilmore Girls fan.

Her preferred lunch spot in the city, which we rarely get to enjoy, is having a leisurely meal with Amy Sherman-Palladino, Lauren, and herself. She shared this, “We simply sit, indulge in a prolonged lunch, and chat non-stop about everything.

The Third Gilmore Girl is out now everywhere books are sold.

The charmingly quaint setting of the show, Stars Hollow – now a beloved staple in TV history – was sparked by an impromptu visit to Washington, Connecticut by Amy Sherman-Palladino. Enchanted by the townsfolk, customs she observed, and inn where she stayed, she departed with the idea for the series, even bringing some of the pilot’s dialogue along.

Sherman-Palladino expressed that if they could manage to evoke in others a fraction of the emotions he experienced wandering through this enchanting village, it would be simply marvelous,” (Deseret News was told by Sherman-Palladino).

2. Alexis Bledel, who was then a student at New York University and had just one unaccredited role to her name, auditioned for the part of Rory.

Reflecting on her experience during an interview with Seth Meyers, Bledel shared, “I was ill and studying at NYU when they repeatedly asked me to audition. I must have gone about six times. Interestingly, I wasn’t a well-versed actor then. I didn’t understand the process. I got a bit restless. I displayed a touch of attitude, which they seemed to appreciate a lot. They said, ‘That’s our girl!’ I responded, ‘Will you call me again?’ and they replied, ‘I like that, that fits perfectly.’

3. Gilmore Girls without Lauren Graham as Lorelai? Unimaginable, right? But it almost happened.

In my New York lodgings, nestled in a friend’s studio apartment, I eagerly unwrapped the Gilmore Girls pilot script. My heart raced as I waited on bated breath for news about M.Y.O.B., the series I had just finished for NBC, wondering if it would be renewed for another season or axed.

It turned out advantageously that M.Y.O.B. wasn’t selected, thus enabling Graham to take on the quick-witted main role. This was beneficial not just for Graham but also for any other actress who might have been vying for that part.

She described her strong attachment to the character after reading the script as an unusual moment of intense recognition that occurs scarcely. “It’s like a reunion with an old acquaintance,” she said, “but at the same time, it’s ‘Step aside, everyone! This is mine!’ all rolled into one.

4. Scott Paterson stood out as the sole contender during the Luke auditions, effortlessly captivating the casting team with his endearing yet grumpy portrayal of the diner owner who would eventually become Lorelai’s husband.

According to Jill Anthony, the casting director, Amy stated, “I have no need to meet anyone else.” She was firm about this, expressing complete certainty when she said, “It’s a fact, he’s one hundred percent correct.

But Paterson never thought he was going to sport Luke’s signature hat and flannel shirts.

On that particular day, the actor shared with Glamour, there were three auditions on his schedule. The second one was the one in question. He had rehearsed for one scene, but he should have prepared two. So, he went in and performed as best he could. At that point, he didn’t care about getting the role because he knew the Gilmore Girls part wasn’t meant for him. The script was exceptional, and it was destined for well-known actors. Since he was running late for another audition and might get a ticket outside, he politely asked if he could leave.

5. Prior to Jared Padalecki securing his lead role as Rory’s initial love interest Dean Forester, two other Canadian actors were let go. This was because the character had been modified to be less “unconventional,” as Anthony shared with Vanity Fair.

6. Both Ryan Gosling and Chris Pine tried out for the television series. Initially, Gosling was considered for a minor role, but during his audition, his performance was less than impressive according to casting director Jami Rudofsky at the 2015 ATX TV Festival.

Meanwhile, Pine shared that his father, actor Robert Pine, arranged his initial professional audition for him, but he can’t recall the role. In a video with W Magazine, he humorously mentioned, “I guess it could have been a boyfriend’s part.

7. Although Melissa McCarthy eventually rose to fame as a prominent comedy figure in Hollywood, Sherman-Palladino disclosed that she had to advocate for the actress to play the endearing and eccentric chef Sookie. During the cast’s reunion panel at the 2015 ATX TV Festival, Sherman-Padiddino clarified, “Initially, there were doubts. People didn’t dislike her, but she had a unique energy that was different from what they expected. The role was simply written for a woman, with no specific physical requirements; I sought someone who was funny and a strong actor.

8. In the initial episode, Sookie was portrayed by Alex Borstein, but she had to relinquish the part due to her commitments on MADtv. She subsequently appeared in minor recurring roles as a harpist and stylist in the series later on. Sherman-Palladino eventually cast Borstein in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, where she won two Emmys for her performance in the Amazon comedy.

10. Initially, Liza Weil tried out for the role of Rory, but producers felt she wasn’t quite suitable. They said, “We really liked you, but it didn’t quite fit.” However, they hinted that if the show got picked up, they might have a part for her. Weil thought that was probably the end of it.

In a playful manner, the actor from How to Get Away With Murder humorously admitted that his younger self was taken aback by certain comments. He found it hard to believe that people would dare write such things! However, now he sees it as flattering and is genuinely pleased about it.

11. The chemistry between Graham and Bledel is often praised, but it was purely a coincidence as they didn’t meet until their first day on set. In fact, Bledel was so inexperienced with acting that Graham had to hold onto her character’s arm to ensure she hit her marks correctly.

“People say, ‘You two have such great chemistry,'” Graham humorously remarked on the show Today. “And I’m like, ‘I’m practically tackling her. That’s why.’

12. Unlike many other actors, Graham and Bledel often ate the food that Lorelai and Rory appeared to consume in the series, a fact well-known by fans, who understood it was quite a large amount.

13. As reported by casting director Mara Casey, during the entire duration of the show, Bledel had romantic relationships with two of her real-life co-stars who portrayed her onscreen boyfriends.

In 2016, she confessed to Life & Style that we used to joke about Alexis dating all of her real-life partners. She was with Jared and Milo Ventimiglia [at the time]. She also dated Chris Heuisler, a young New York actor who appeared as a guest character. He was quite a nice guy.

14. At first, Sean Gunn was presented as the DSL installer Mick from Stars Hollow. However, his role evolved into a series regular as Kirk, who had a unique job in each episode. But why the name change? Gunn himself explained that Sherman-Palladino had merely forgotten that he already had a character name.

15. The WB was considering a spin-off featuring Ventimiglia, using the third season episode “Here Comes the Son” as a trial run for the potential new show. If produced, Windward Circle would have focused on Jess’ life in Venice Beach, California, but unfortunately, due to financial constraints, the series never moved forward.

16. During the final season of “Gilmore Girls,” discussions arose about chronicling Rory’s journey into adulthood since Graham opted not to reprise her role.

At some point, Graham explicitly stated, “I won’t be returning,” as he shared with TV Guide. Then, they considered if they could continue with just Alexis. However, I wouldn’t presume to speak for her, but we had a back-and-forth discussion about it. In the end, neither of us was keen on continuing without each other.

She went on to say, “They were brainstorming solutions for all aspects. At one point, there was consideration that I might take on a different role instead of being part of the show in the same manner.

17. After contract talks broke down, a shocking announcement rocked Stars Hollow: the writing duo of Sherman-Palladino and their husband Daniel Palladino would not return for the seventh (and last) season.

Essentially, they explained to TV Guide that we couldn’t agree on the terms of a fresh contract with the studio. Moreover, they made an effort to secure a long-term agreement, as stated by Sherman-Palladino.

She clarified, “Negotiations in a deal can involve many factors. Our request wasn’t outlandish or unreasonable. It wasn’t something far-fetched like reaching for the moon. In essence, it was primarily aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the production.

Although they had already brought in their substitute, Dave Rosenthal, Sherman-Palladino confessed that handing over control was a terrifying experience, feeling more like a dreadful nightmare.

And she’s since revealed she’s never watched the final season.

18. Despite the undeniable on-screen chemistry between Paterson and Graham as Luke and Lorelai, there were longstanding rumors of tension on set. Fans speculated that this was the cause of their favorite duo’s split in a controversial season six plot, but Graham dismissed these allegations in an interview with TV Guide following the series finale.

She acknowledged that the situation may have been exaggerated, but she clarified that her close relationship with David Sutcliffe, who portrayed Rory’s father Christopher, did not influence casting decisions. “I was never trying to provide him any special advantage due to our friendship,” she emphasized.

Similarly to the fans, Graham felt equally let down and irritated by the unclear ending of Luke and Lorelai’s relationship in the initial broadcast of the series.

She shared that she adores the dynamic between Luke and Lorelai so deeply… As far as she’s concerned, their storyline didn’t conclude in a fulfilling manner. She expressed this to TV Guide, stating, ‘We weren’t certain it was over. Amy wasn’t with us during the last season. I can’t provide a resolution because it simply didn’t wrap up satisfactorily.’

19. The series ended differently from how Amy Sherman-Palladino initially envisioned due to her departure after season six. She frequently hinted at this, leaving fans speculating for years about the “last four words” she intended to use as a finale for the Gilmore women’s storyline.

In the years that followed, almost every interview with the Palladinos included questions about the enigmatic phrases. However, they never revealed any specifics, for a strategic reason. “I don’t want to completely disclose [my ideas],” Sherman-Palladino explained to Entertainment Weekly, because if a movie is in production, I’ll essentially be revisiting where I left off, and then I’d find myself in a bit of a pickle.

When the announcement for the Netflix revival came in 2016, it was made clear that the four-episode series would culminate in the eagerly anticipated four-word finale. You can find all the details about this here (indeed, they were well worth it).

20. Edward Herrmann and Kelly Bishop, portraying Lorelai’s well-to-do yet affectionate parents Richard and Emily Gilmore, developed a strong bond off-screen. In fact, Herrmann’s spouse, Star Herrmann, affectionately called Bishop his “second wife.” Tragically, Herrmann lost his life in 2014 at the age of 71 following a tough fight against brain cancer. In the days leading up to his passing, his wife warmly invited Bishop to spend time with him during those final moments.

She shared with Vanity Fair that they were the sole individuals who had arrived, and both its significance to him and her made it crucial.

As a devoted follower, I found Bishop’s description of the invitation as “wondrous yet melancholic and astonishing” truly encapsulated my feelings. During the cast reunion panel at the ATX TV Festival, a vacant chair was thoughtfully placed on stage in tribute to Herrmann.
