Has The Sims 5 been cancelled? Project Rene explained

As a dedicated Sims enthusiast with countless hours spent in creating and nurturing my virtual families over the years, I must admit that the news about The Sims 5 development being halted has left me feeling a tad deflated. However, upon further reflection, I’ve come to realize that change can sometimes bring exciting opportunities.

Nearly ten years have passed since Electronic Arts introduced The Sims 4, leading us to ponder what the future might hold for The Sims 5!

Regrettably, I must share some disappointing news with you: At this moment, there’s no active work on The Sims 5, meaning it isn’t being developed at present.

What is in development, however, is ‘Project Rene’ – a new multiplayer Sims experience.

Project Rene isn’t an expansion to The Sims 4, nor is it in development at EA as The Sims 5.

An intriguing prospect, and one that’s worth learning more about.

Has The Sims 5 been cancelled? Here’s everything you need to know about Project Rene.

Has The Sims 5 been cancelled?

Contrary to earlier speculations suggesting that The Sims 5 is being produced, EA has clarified that they are not working on The Sims 5 at this time.

According to EA’s Vice President, Kate Gorman, when speaking to Variety, it’s important to note that Electronic Arts (EA) isn’t creating The Sims 5 as a substitute for The Sims 4.

As a movie buff, I’m here to share some exciting news straight from the horse’s mouth, EA! We’ve got plans to keep delivering that high-definition simulation experience that you’ve come to expect and crave, but with a twist – it won’t feel like we’re hitting the reset button on your progress. In other words, all the incredible work you’ve put into FIFA 14 won’t just vanish!

As a passionate movie buff, I can certainly relate. Just like how I wouldn’t want to rewind a beloved film after years of cherishing it, I understand that gamers don’t want to start over with The Sims 4 after a decade of creating, nurturing, and growing their virtual worlds. EA, being the gracious director, doesn’t wish for its vast audience to face such a predicament.

Gorman mentions that the future of the franchise appears to be about maintaining progress, consistency across games, and creating a continuous, ongoing gaming experience rather than one that starts and stops between different products.

What is The Sims Project Rene?

Earlier, Game Director Grant Rodiek clarified during a stream that Project Rene isn’t a massively multiplayer online game (MMO). Instead, it’s not a common area where every action involves interaction with multiple players at all times.

Feel free to enjoy the game at your own pace, setting your own rules. Whenever you wish, you can also extend the invitation for others to join you in the fun, continuing with your preferred style.

During the Variety interview, Gorman mentioned: “Our games offer a chance for players to interact and enjoy each other’s company in a lively, immediate, and multiplayer setting.

Regarding the specifics of Project Rene, Gorman isn’t sharing much information yet since the development team is still working on it.

At the heart of our work lies simulation, and we’re committed to delivering the same immersive experience for our players. However, we aim to bring this experience to life in a world populated by real players and NPCs. We’re currently learning and developing this concept – so keep an eye on our updates!

When could Project Rene come out?

Without official word from EA, we cannot say for certain when Project Rene will come out.

You probably won’t see it before 2025, given that the specifics about the project are currently limited, even though it does have a designated name.

Perhaps we’ll have to wait a bit more as well. Only time will reveal when the Project Rene launch date is set, and ideally, Electronic Arts will share updates about their multiplayer Sims project earlier rather than later.
