As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for powerful narratives and a deep appreciation for the craft of Cillian Murphy, I cannot contain my excitement for “Small Things Like These.” Having wept uncontrollably over Claire Keegan’s 2010 novel Foster, I can only imagine the emotional rollercoaster this film promises to be.

In this movie adapted from Claire Keegan’s popular novel, Cillian Murphy plays Bill Furlong, a dedicated father. As a coal merchant, he strives to provide for his family. However, he uncovers dark secrets hidden within the local convent, which also reveals truths about himself. This compels him to revisit his past and challenge the quiet complicity of a small Irish town under the influence of the Catholic Church, as it suppresses the truth.
Featuring Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, Clare Dunne, Ellen Behan, Emily Watson, this film is helmed by director Tim Mielants and written by Enda Walsh, adapted from the acclaimed novel by Claire Keegan.
The movie is adapted from Claire Keegan’s 2021 historical novel titled “Small Things Like These.” In 2022, this book received nominations for both the Booker Prize and the Los Bones Folio Award. Furthermore, it was honored with the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction, the Ambassadors’ Prize for top Irish novel in France, and The Kerry Prize for Irish novel of the year.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that this film promises to be both harrowing and potent, stirring up anger about the events portrayed on screen. I, myself, am a fervent admirer of Claire Keegan, the author of the original novel upon which this film is based, and can still recall reading her 2010 novel “Foster” on a train, needing to pull my hoodie over my face due to uncontrollable tears. “Small Things Like These” debuted as the opening film at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, making it a must-watch for any discerning viewer.
