As a devoted fan of All Creatures Great and Small, I must say that this season promises to be as heartwarming as ever, with the addition of baby Jimmy to Skeldale House. The dedication and teamwork displayed by Nicholas Ralph, Rachel Shenton, and the entire cast in working with real babies and a prop baby named Jelly Jimmy is truly commendable. It’s fascinating to see how they manage to bring life to such tiny, yet significant characters on screen.
In the latest season of All Creatures Great and Small, there’s a significant change at Skeldale House, as James and Helen welcome their newborn baby, which made its appearance in the 2023 Christmas special.
In the show, the character of Baby Jimmy is primarily portrayed by two actual infants. Interestingly, it has been disclosed by James and Helen’s actors, Nicholas Ralph and Rachel Shenton, that they also collaborated with a lifelike prop baby named Jelly Jimmy. This model was reportedly quite intimidating.
Ralph remarked about working with the babies on set: “Indeed, it was two tiny infants! They were simply outstanding. Just like any other performer, they needed some time to adjust to their surroundings – considering they were only three months old.
After some time, they became accustomed, and it was heartwarming to witness their smiles upon recognition. They were delightful to collaborate with – endearingly cheerful as soon as they grew comfortable.
He went on saying: “We also have Jelly Jimmy – truly frightening! It’s ironic because it’s called ‘Jelly,’ but it seemed more solid than jelly, incredibly heavy! And he was nearly three times the size of the babies we deal with, resembling a toddler with a baby’s face.
“The real babies were far superior to Jelly Jimmy.”
In the process, Shenton mentioned: “We practice scenes with the artificial baby, Jelly Jimmy, and later use the actual baby, Jimmy, only for filming.
In other words, it’s essential to clearly understand your actions, positions, and mental state, aiming for fewer retakes. I enjoy this approach as it adds an extra layer of concentration.
Additionally, this season will bring back Callum Woodhouse playing the role of Tristan, making it clear that Skeldale House will be bustling with activity.
It appears that the reunion between me, Tristan, and my brother Siegfried, portrayed by Samuel West, won’t be as straightforward as I had hoped.
West remarked about Tristan, “It’s clear he has transformed. Changes I can’t fully comprehend have taken place in him. There are undeniably terrible experiences he’s endured that he’s not disclosing. He seems to be hiding beneath alcohol and joviality.
All Creatures Great and Small seasons 1-4 are available to watch on My5. Season 5 will air on Thursday 19th September at 9pm on Channel 5 and My5. You can order James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small from Amazon.
