As a die-hard fan of all things sci-fi and a connoisseur of cult classics, I can’t help but feel my heart racing with excitement as I type this! The long-awaited 4K edition of Galaxy Quest is finally here, marking its 25th anniversary. Growing up in the golden age of VHS tapes, I remember sneaking down to the basement to watch this gem whenever I could.

The iconic status of the 1999 sci-fi comedy film Galaxy Quest has continued to expand throughout the years, making a high-definition update necessary. As this year marks the 25th anniversary of the movie, it seems like an ideal moment for such an upgrade. In fact, Funko already released Galaxy Quest merchandise earlier in the year as part of the celebration. With that in mind, two versions of Galaxy Quest on 4K UHD Blu-ray / Digital became available for pre-order today – a standard version and a Limited Edition Steelbook edition featuring new artwork that is expected to run out soon.

You can now pre-purchase the 25th anniversary Steelbook version of Galaxy Quest on 4K Blu-ray through Amazon, with the standard edition also up for pre-order. Both editions will hit the shelves on December 3rd. If the Steelbook edition runs out on Amazon, GRUV is expected to list it soon. GRUV has been a popular destination for Blu-rays, particularly limited editions, and you can save 20% by using the code SIGNUP20 at checkout. Here’s a sneak peek of the special features included in the 4K Blu-ray release:

  • NEW 4K RESTORATION OF THE FILM
  • DOLBY VISION/HDR PRESENTATION OF THE FILM
  • DOLBY ATMOS AUDIO TRACK
  • NEW: Filmmaker Focus program with director Dean Parisot
  • Plus hours of legacy special features
  • Optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature

Will there be a Galaxy Quest 2?

According to reports from April 2023, a Galaxy Quest television show is being developed for Paramount+. During an interview with Chris Killian about The Santa Clauses, Tim Allen mentioned that he’s eager to make a sequel to Galaxy Quest happen in some capacity.

Day after day, the team associated with Galaxy Quest, including myself, have been eagerly anticipating the return of the Thermians. We discussed this very topic not long ago among ourselves, and we can’t understand why it hasn’t occurred yet,” Allen explains. “Unfortunately, a script that originally featured Alan Rickman and me was scrapped due to his passing. This plot point significantly impacted the storyline, as it was both intelligent and entertaining. I have a deep affection for this crew and the entire Galaxy Quest project.

Galaxy Quest is considered one of the best Star Trek movies.

Galaxy Quest is essentially a humorous take on Star Trek, focusing on a troupe of actors who played in a popular sci-fi TV show that aired years ago. These actors have found it difficult to make their mark beyond these roles. When they learn that aliens exist and believe them to be the source of assistance, they’re surprised because these aliens have been watching their old TV series, assuming it was a documentary rather than fiction.

Dean Parisot was the director of “Galaxy Quest,” a film scripted by David Howard and Robert Gordon. Although it has no formal connection to Star Trek, attendees at Star Trek Las Vegas in 2013 ranked it as the seventh-best Star Trek movie ever made. This places “Galaxy Quest” in the middle of the list, situated between the films “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Trek Generations.

1999 marked the release of the movie titled “Galaxy Quest“. During its cinema screening, it managed to gross $90 million, which was double its initial budget of $45 million. Critics found the film entertaining, and it garnered a remarkable 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus among critics is that it’s an “intelligent and amusing satire with a top-notch cast”, adding that no prior knowledge of Trekkie lore is necessary to appreciate this film.

Though a movie sequel hasn’t surfaced yet, I’ve been fortunate to witness the continuation of the space-faring adventures in comic book form. In 2008, IDW Publishing introduced me to Galaxy Quest: Global Warning, and five years later, they started a new ongoing series titled Galaxy Quest, set years after the film. This series was later compiled as Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues. As a devoted fan, I’ve cherished every moment of these comic book tales!
