As a fashion enthusiast with a deep love for cinema and storytelling, I find myself utterly captivated by the meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design behind these extraordinary costumes. Each character’s ensemble speaks volumes about their personality, journey, and connection to nature or the supernatural.

The much-anticipated release of “Agatha All Along” has arrived, and Marvel’s latest brood of witches is leaving quite a mark. Daniel Selon, responsible for Kathryn Hahn’s transformation into the spooky realm, designed these enchanting costumes. During the fan premiere event for “Agatha All Along”, ComicBook had an opportunity to converse with the costume designer about his methods behind shaping each of these captivating witches. Selon has previously worked on “WandaVision” as an assistant costume designer, so he’s no stranger to Westview. Several characters from the past are also making a delightful comeback, but many will be seen in the MCU for the first time. Making a strong first impression is crucial, as fans will quickly pick up on how their costumes define these characters from the start.

In order to travel The Witches Road, you have to bring a coven. So, Hahn’s Marvel fan favorite must recruit some magic users from all kinds of different walks of life to complete this quest. Joining Agatha Harkness on The Witches’ Road are Aubrey Plaza as Rio Vidal, Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu, Debra Jo Rupp as Mrs. Hart (but don’t call her that!), Sasheer Zamata as Jennifer Kale, Ali Ahn as Alice Wu-Gulliver, and Joe Locke as “Teen.” Let’s dive right in with the legend herself Patti LuPone!

Lilia Calderu – Divination Worn On Her Sleeve

Ms. Calderu is one of the oldest witches alive, having lived for quite some time. This means she’s witnessed a great deal. Given her abilities primarily revolve around divination, this is quite literal. In episode 2 of the Disney+ series, she can be found doing tarot readings and barely getting by. Selon sought to honor her historical significance, as well as the accomplished actress portraying the character, through the design. The design evokes a sense of antiquity that commands admiration among these contemporary witches.

According to Selon, this piece was specifically crafted with Lilia Calderu in mind. He envisioned her as one of the elder witches, and he wished for her to own a garment that seemed timeless, perhaps something that could have been handed down from her ancestral witch family who were known for their intuitive and divinatory abilities.

He went on to say, “Thus, I found it fascinating that this piece was not just a garment, but also a protective one with elements of her narrative embedded within. This inspired us to design a set of tarot cards and craft artwork which were then turned into the intricate embroidered scenes adorning the collar. In essence, we designed our own tarot deck! Since everything must be tailored specifically for Ms. LuPone, unique and one-of-a-kind, we developed a concept around her.

imagine a very ancient creature with two heads, symbolizing the concept of something old and something new merging together. Above and below this creature, there were women exchanging knowledge about water, history, and concepts, symbolized by them pouring water from vase to vase. This exchange was like passing information back and forth through generations.

Jennifer Kale – Potions Master & Keeper Of Woo

Jennifer Kale embodies a contemporary witch who specializes in potions. She inhabits a realm often associated with Goop-like aesthetics. We aimed to create something that exuded femininity and elegance, capturing an aspirational quality – you might desire to dislike her or identify with her. To achieve this, we incorporated the ingredients she uses in her potions, which are also found in her Kale Care line, into our artwork. This art was then embellished onto fabric that we dyed ourselves. The finished pieces not only represent the elements of her potion-making but also symbolize her identity as a witch, literally woven into the fabric itself.

He commented, “Our intention was for her to seem slightly under-prepared. She has a refined demeanor, if you catch my drift? And, she’s not fond of getting messy. However, she does, and she will. The reward is even greater when you witness this pristine pink outfit ruined by mud.

Alice Wu-Gulliver – Blood Witch & Protections Expert

She is referred to as a ‘blood witch’, being the daughter of a renowned rock goddess witch. Her childhood can be imagined as one spent traveling, akin to being part of a band’s entourage. There’s an undercurrent of rock and roll in her history, Selon noted. Moreover, she is known for her protective abilities; her witches’ craft seems to revolve around self-defense. The clothing choices reflect this, giving off a strong and impenetrable vibe.

The designer shared an interesting insight about a character they’ve created. There’s something about this character that might initially seem unapproachable or intimidating – she comes across as a bit blunt, reserved, even a touch harsh. The designer drew inspiration for the character’s color scheme from poison dart frogs found in the Amazon rainforest. These vibrant-colored amphibians signal to other animals, “Stay away! I’m poisonous.” Similarly, the character’s costume subtly represents her internal struggles and past traumas, hinting at a deeper story of pain and damage, much like the frog’s warning colors.

Ms. Hart – Please Call Her Sharon

Reconnecting with this character, alongside Debra Jo Rupp, was an absolute delight. Her charm is unmatched, and I’d gladly share meals with her all day long. It was crucial for us to convey that Debra Jo Rupp has a keen interest in gardening. Her garden is truly remarkable, and it’s where we first encounter her. She might even be showcasing her prized Begonias at the local fair. We aimed to highlight her love for flowers and her gardening skills. However, she’s not just a flower enthusiast; she’s also seen working diligently in the garden, wearing an apron and getting her hands dirty.

Rio Vidal – THE Green Witch

Selon explained that the character she designed was a green witch, drawing inspiration from nature for her costume’s details. Upon closer inspection, you can see there’s a rich depth to it. She sought out delicate fabrics, similar to onion skin, to create an illusion of layers. These layers included various foils and netting, carefully arranged to give the garment a living quality. The green layer was hand-dyed, and every element was crafted by hand. Each color was meticulously controlled through hand dyeing, and the entire costume was stitched by hand.

“Teen” – A Question Of Identity

As a dedicated fan, I can express that his life story is shrouded in intrigue, which adds an exciting layer to our shared exploration. We’re both on a quest to unravel the enigma of this character, trying to piece together fragments of his identity. The garments he wears become essential pieces of this puzzle, each item carrying its own narrative.

Agatha Harkness – The Star Of The Show

According to Selon, “We aimed to build upon the color narrative introduced in Wandavision, taking it one step further by transitioning her into the real world. This was crucial for portraying her as a relatable human and a member of society. We paid close attention to intricate details when tailoring the story.

This design piece is one you’ll want to scrutinize carefully – observe how it hangs, drapes, and flows when Kathryn wears it. The designer emphasized its unique charm, particularly in the way the collar and lapel meet, which draws inspiration from a captivating detail.
