As a gamer who’s been lost in the labyrinth of intricate narratives like the enigmatic world of Lost and now the gripping townscape of From, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic exhilaration. The thrill of unraveling complex mysteries and exploring the depths of human resilience is what keeps me coming back for more.
Actors or filmmakers associated with the ABC series “Lost” are accustomed to being part of a project that sparks endless debate about present events and future possibilities, and Harold Perrineau is no exception. Perrineau also plays a lead role in the MGM+ series “From,” which shares a narrative tone reminiscent of “Lost.” Given the numerous theories surrounding “From,” Perrineau has chosen to steer clear of such discussions to concentrate entirely on breathing life into his character, Boyd Stevens. The third season of “From” premieres on MGM+ on September 22nd.
I won’t be aware of what’s going on in the series. Even if they figure it out, I wouldn’t know. Honestly, I don’t want to know, and here’s why: I prefer to stay uninformed about the show’s direction. As for fan theories, I don’t pay much attention to them. Instead, I aim to portray Boyd authentically, without being influenced by anything else. My mind can get cluttered sometimes.” – Perrineau explained to ComicBook his limited knowledge of the series’ progression.
The enigmatic town, which ensnares everyone who steps within its borders, gradually reveals its terrifying secrets in this gripping tale. As the trapped inhabitants struggle to maintain some semblance of normal life and seek a means of escape, they must simultaneously contend with the perils lurking in the bordering forest – among them, the dreadful creatures that emerge once darkness falls. With the nail-biting ending of Season 2, the prospect of an exit will prove tantalizingly real as the true essence of the town is unveiled, and its inhabitants take action against the manifold horrors lurking in their midst.
A consistent theme in Perrineau’s acting career is portraying characters who find themselves stuck or confined, such as the characters he played on shows like “From” and “Lost,” where they mysteriously find themselves in enclosed spaces, or his character from “Oz,” who was imprisoned. In essence, his roles in “Oz” and “Lost” lead to his portrayal of Boyd in “From.
The key factor that has made each of these shows stand out is the exceptional caliber of their writers. For instance, Tom Fontana from Oz and Damon Lindelof from Lost, along with John Griffin more recently, are all remarkably talented individuals who excel at crafting complex, realistic characters. They avoid stereotypes and instead strive for genuine reactions to situations, which results in deeply human portrayals.
He continued, “Oz gave me a really good foundation of trying to find the human being. Lost took it to another place, because Lost, we just didn’t know what the hell was ever happening, ever. Being able to still try to be grounded was really good, because now, in From, where we also don’t know a lot about what’s going on, I feel like all of those things help me make Boyd as grounded as possible without ever getting too caught up in any stereotype or archetype of a character, archetype of a sheriff, or archetype of the guy who saves the town — if I save the town, I don’t actually know. I can stay grounded in the person that Boyd Stevens is and what he’s trying to achieve.”
In the world of “From”, it remains unclear how long the characters have been stranded or exactly how much time has elapsed, but through the first two seasons, we’ve observed Boyd’s growth and hardships. As Season 3 unfolds, Boyd finds himself in a significantly different position compared to where he started in the series debut.
In this current season, it seems as if the town is consistently tormenting him, much like a persistent bully would. As Perrineau explained, Boyd has evolved significantly over the years, and in the upcoming season, his struggles will shift from questioning his own intellect to questioning his leadership abilities. The internal conflict becomes more profound, with him wrestling with doubts such as “Is this correct?” and “Am I doing this correctly?” Only for him to assertively respond, “Yes, I am!” and then ultimately prove himself wrong. This new season promises a lot of such self-doubts and missteps.
Instead of directly portraying violent events, the creators chose to emphasize Boyd’s response to the situation in the Season 3 premiere of the series, rather than focusing on the graphic depiction of the encounter itself.
In Perrineau’s own words, “They shared with me a great deal about what he was observing. I then had to translate those concepts into visual images,” he explained about portraying the gruesome events. “Images that I could envision, as we were dealing with creatures beyond imagination. So, I had to convert that into something tangible, something that not only I can picture, but perhaps even someone who has experienced it could recognize and understand – thus conveying the idea that what he’s experiencing is similar to this treatment. It was quite a wild experience, and that’s just a tiny part of the two hours we spent there.
From Season 3 premieres on Sunday, September 22nd on MGM+.
