Orphan Black: Echoes Cancelled by AMC After One Season

As a dedicated fan who has followed the Clone Club saga since its inception, I am deeply disheartened by the cancellation of Orphan Black: Echoes. The show was a brilliant continuation of the original series, offering a fresh take on the clone narrative while maintaining the intrigue and emotional depth that made Orphan Black such a beloved classic.

The final episode of Orphan Black: Echoes has been broadcast, bringing an end to the series. On Wednesday, it was announced that the show won’t continue for a second season on AMC and BBC America. This new series serves as a sequel and spin-off from the Emmy-winning original Orphan Black, which premiered its entire first season internationally last fall, followed by weekly episodes in the U.S. this summer.

In the years following the original storyline, “Orphan Black: Echoes” explores a fresh cloning mystery, primarily focusing on Dr. Kira Manning (Keeley Hawes), who developed the ability to create full clone models using existing DNA. A woman named Lucy (Krysten Ritter) learns she is one of these clones. Notable characters from “Orphan Black,” such as Jordan Gavaris as Felix Dawkins and Evelyne Brochu as Delphine Cormier, make appearances in the series.

What Would Orphan Black: Echoes Season 2 Have Been About?

In Season 2 of Echoes, we might expect the narrative to delve into the aftermath of Paul Darros’ (James Hiroyuki Lao) revelation about his human cloning scheme, which he exposed to the world at the end of Season 1. However, this plan was a closely guarded secret, unknown to most of the show’s characters and the broader public. In reality, Darros had extracted genetic data from some of the world’s brightest minds and produced teenage versions of each individual, intending to control their lives for his personal financial advantage. This group included a youthful version of Kira, as well as a fresh iteration of Jules (Amanda Fix). Tragically, Darros murdered the original Jules, ending her life.

According to Anna Fishko, the mastermind behind this series, there’s still a possibility for a second season. She expressed her hopes to TVLine, stating, “We are genuinely hoping for a Season 2. It’s not just an idea, but something we’ve discussed with AMC and it remains on the table as an ongoing conversation.

Would Tatiana Maslany Have Returned in Orphan Black: Echoes?

In a recent interview, Fishko disclosed that initial plans involved Tatiana Maslany, who played multiple roles in Orphan Black, reappearing as one of the Leda clones in the first season of Echoes. However, due to scheduling issues arising from Maslany’s role in AMC’s cancelled adaptation of Invitation to a Bonfire, this cameo didn’t happen. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet which clone character Maslany would have played.

Indeed, Fishko disclosed that they had discussed her extensively and even planned an entire episode for her later in the season. However, due to scheduling conflicts, they found themselves filming at the same time she was, which made coordinating impractical. Regrettably, it didn’t work out as planned.
