Following the debut of Palworld in early 2024, The Pokemon Company announced an investigation into the game and threatened to take action if it found any infringement on their intellectual property (IP). After this statement, they remained silent on the issue, leading many to believe no litigation would be pursued. However, recent developments suggest otherwise, as the companies have now filed a joint lawsuit against Palworld.
As an ardent fan, I’m sharing some exciting news that just came up on Nintendo’s official site. They’ve taken legal action against Pocketpair at the Tokyo District Court. The reason? Nintendo, along with Pokemon Company, claims that a certain game called Palworld has infringed upon patents they both own. To set things right, they’re seeking compensation for the alleged damage. This move is primarily to safeguard not just their brand but also the intellectual property they have nurtured over time.
On September 18, 2024, according to a statement on their website, Nintendo Co., Ltd. and The Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit in the Tokyo District Court against Pocketpair, Inc. for patent infringement. The legal action aims to stop the infringement and secure compensation for damages. This is due to the game Palworld, developed by Pocketpair, allegedly violating several patents owned by Nintendo. Nintendo plans to take further steps to prevent any misuse of its intellectual property rights, including the Nintendo brand, in order to safeguard the properties it has diligently built over time.
For quite some time, the game Palworld has been reminiscent of Pokemon due to its monster-catching mechanics combined with survival and shooting elements. However, certain creatures or “Pals” in Palworld have sparked debates among fans as they seem strikingly similar to iconic Pokemon characters from the Nintendo series. Such similarities have not gone unnoticed by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, leading them to believe that a legal dispute may be necessary.
