After the rapper’s September 16th arrest on charges of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution, a judge decided that he is no longer required to pay over $100 million to Michigan inmate Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith. This decision was made in a civil case where Cardello-Smith had sued the rapper (Combs) for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting him back in 1997, which were separate issues from the criminal charges.
Initially, Combs was mandated to pay the substantial amount on September 9, following a Michigan judge’s approval of Cardello-Smith’s request for a default judgment. However, Combs failed to attend a virtual court hearing, which led to this decision.
Nevertheless, David Fink, Diddy’s lawyer, successfully persuaded the judge to dismiss the verdict during a September 18th hearing. This was because Cardello-Smith allegedly did not properly serve Combs with the lawsuit in line with Michigan’s legal procedures, as reported by TMZ.
At the court hearing, Judge Anna Marie Anzalone additionally ruled against maintaining the temporary injunction that restricted Diddy from liquidating any assets to cover the damages. Furthermore, she stated that Diddy might prevail in the case based on statute of limitations arguments, as the claims made by Cardello-Smith date back to 1997, according to TMZ.
We have attempted to get a response from Diddy’s representative and the spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Corrections regarding Cardello-Smith’s contact details, but we haven’t received any replies yet.
In his original lawsuit, Cardello-Smith, who is currently incarcerated due to convictions for 12 crimes related to sexual misconduct and 2 crimes related to kidnapping, claimed that he met Combs while working at a restaurant in the Detroit area back in 1997, as stated in the lawsuit obtained by Variety.
According to him, the pair attended a party, and it was there that they started engaging in sexual activities with two other women. However, at some point, Combs is said to have inappropriately touched Cardello-Smith and slipped something into his drink, causing him to lose consciousness.
After the September 9th court hearing, Diddy’s lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, communicated to TopMob News that Cardello-Smith was merely attempting to swindle the rapper.
The attorney stated that the individual in question is a convicted offender with a history of sexual misconduct. Specifically, he’s been found guilty and penalized for 14 instances of sexual assault and abduction spanning across a period of 26 years.
He went on to say, “His resume now expands to include defrauding the court while in prison; Mr. Combs claims he’s never even met him, nor has he received any court summons or lawsuit. Mr. Combs anticipates a quick dismissal of this judgment.
Cardello-Smith’s lawsuit was one in a long line of legal troubles that Diddy is facing.
On September 16th in New York, he was taken into custody regarding a separate matter. According to a federal indictment obtained by TopMob News, Combs stands accused of mistreating, intimidating, and manipulating women and others close to him to satisfy his sexual needs, safeguard his reputation, and hide his actions for several decades.
On September 17, the 54-year-old chose to plead not guilty to the presented accusations. However, his legal team’s request for a $50 million bond package, which they argued would enable him to mount a robust defense in court, was rejected. This information comes from a legal letter obtained by TopMob News.
Shortly after the update, Agnifilo shared insight into Diddy’s current condition.
In simpler terms, he explained to the court, as reported by NBC News, that the individual is not without flaw; there have been instances of drug misuse. Moreover, he has experienced unhealthy relationships. He further mentioned that Diddy is seeking help through treatment and therapy to address personal issues requiring attention.

Agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) carried out searches at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ properties in Los Angeles and Miami on March 25, according to several sources within law enforcement who spoke to NBC News. The warrant was issued by the Southern District of New York, and an HSI spokesperson from New York confirmed to TopMob News that they were executing search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI teams in Los Angeles, Miami, and local law enforcement partners. At the time of the searches, it was reported that Combs was in the Miami area.
The revelation emerged regarding an investigation following accusations of sexual misconduct against Combs, which started with lawsuits from several accusers in November. In response to these allegations, he penned a statement on Instagram in December saying, “Horrendous claims have been made against me by people seeking a swift financial gain. I want to make it unequivocally clear: I am innocent of all the reprehensible actions being alleged. I will vigorously defend my reputation, my family, and the truth.
The day after HSI executed the search warrants at Combs’ L.A. and Miami properties, his lawyer spoke out.
“Yesterday, there was a gross overuse of military-level force as search warrants were executed at Mr. Combs’ residences,” attorney Aaron Dyer said in a March 26 statement to TopMob News. “There is no excuse for the excessive show of force and hostility exhibited by authorities or the way his children and employees were treated.”
Dyer noted Combs “was never detained but spoke to and cooperated with authorities.”
“Despite media speculation, neither Mr. Combs nor any of his family members have been arrested nor has their ability to travel been restricted in any way,” his lawyer’s statement continued. “This unprecedented ambush—paired with an advanced, coordinated media presence—leads to a premature rush to judgment of Mr. Combs and is nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits.”
Dyer stated that Combs intends to vindicate himself, as there’s been no proof of criminal or civil wrongdoing related to the accusations against him. He emphasized that Combs maintains his innocence and will persistently strive each day to establish his innocence.
During the investigations, it was reported by multiple law enforcement sources who have knowledge of the warrant, that authorities from the Department of Homeland Security confiscated phones from Combs’ Miami residence prior to his planned trip to the Bahamas. Additionally, several sources privy to the situation stated that firearms were found during the search.
A person acquainted with the situation disclosed to NBC News that four individuals – three women and one man – were questioned by prosecutors and investigators from the Southern District of New York regarding accusations involving sex trafficking, sexual assault, illicit drug dealing, and gun-related offenses, which are reportedly associated with Combs.
On the same day that search warrants were carried out at Combs’ properties in Miami and Los Angeles, one of his associates, Brendan Paul, was apprehended by the Miami-Dade police on charges of drug possession. NBC News reported this, citing a source within law enforcement who is knowledgeable about the case. According to the arrest affidavit from Miami-Dade, Paul was detained for allegedly holding suspected cocaine and marijuana candy. NBC News acquired prison records showing that Paul was released on March 26 after posting bond. In response, Paul’s attorney, Brian Bieber, stated, “We will not be trying this case in the media; all matters will be addressed in court.” In May, Paul agreed to a plea deal, with his lawyer, Bieber, informing People magazine that “Brendan accepted the prosecutor’s offer to allow him entry into the diversion program. Upon completion of this program, the entire case against him will be dropped.
On September 16, 2024, as reported by NBC News, he was taken into custody in the lobby of a hotel in New York City. The specific charges against him remain undisclosed, and it’s uncertain whether his arrest is linked to any recent investigations.
The lawyer for Mr. Combs expressed disappointment over the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s choice to pursue a prosecution that they consider unjust, stating this in a statement to TopMob News. They acknowledged that Mr. Combs is not perfect, but maintains he is not a criminal. Notably, Mr. Combs has been fully cooperative with the investigation and even willingly moved to New York last week, preparing for these charges.
After Combs was arrested based on the sealed indictment, the indictment was unsealed on Sept. 17.
The 54-year-old was charged with racketeering conspiracy; sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; as well as transportation to engage in prostitution, according to court documents obtained by NBC News.
The indictment alleged Combs “abused, threatened, and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct” for more than a decade, with prosecutors saying the purported behavior started around 2008.
“To do so,” the documents stated, “Combs relied on the employees, resources, and influence of the multi-faceted business empire that he led and controlled—creating a criminal enterprise whose members and associates engaged in, and attempted to engage in, among other crimes, sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice.”
As reported by NBC News, Combs has pleaded not guilty and was denied bail. His attorney, Marc Agnifilo, stated before the court proceedings that he would put up a strong fight using all available resources, expressing complete faith in his legal team.
