As a child of the new millennium who grew up with the convenience of streaming platforms and binge-watching at my fingertips, I must confess that I’ve had the pleasure of immersing myself in some truly captivating television series based on books. Oh, the joys these stories have brought into my life!
There are some more people to meet on vacation.
The much-awaited movie based on Emily Henry’s top-selling romance novel, “People We Meet on Vacation,” has increased its star wattage by adding more prominent actors to the cast following the initial selection of Tom Blyth and Emily Bader for the main roles of Alex and Poppy.
The stars of “The Good Place,” “Emily in Paris,” “Euphoria,” and the upcoming series “White Lotus” – Jameela Jamil, Lucian Laviscount, Lukas Gage, and Sarah Catherine Hook respectively – have all been added to the cast for a new film. The movie is being helmed by director Brett Haley, who previously worked on “All the Bright Places.
The story centers around best friends Poppy and Alex—one a free spirit and the other straight laced, though with an apparent spark lingering beneath the surface—who spend their summers traveling together, meeting the aforementioned “people.”
2021 saw the publication of Henry’s most successful book yet, joining a list of hit novels such as “Happy Place,” “Book Lovers,” “Beach Read,” and the recently released “Funny Story.” Remarkably, all these titles are currently under consideration for film or TV adaptations.
After announcing the cast, Hook posted on her Instagram Story, “Reviving romantic comedies, one getaway after another,” and Jamil responded, “This is such a blast!
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but be thrilled about the meteoric rise of two fresh talents – Blyth and Bader. The former made his grand entrance into the cinematic world with an outstanding performance as Coriolanus Snow in the prequel film to the iconic Hunger Games series, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Meanwhile, Bader captivates audiences as the lead in the engrossing new Amazon Prime series, My Lady Jane.
In March, Henry shared with Variety that the screenplay for “People We Meet on Vacation,” written by Yulin Kuang, has been revised multiple times.
Apart from working on “Beach Read”, the movie adaptation, it’s mentioned that Kuang’s scripts are expected to be completed shortly as Henry stated in March, since she wants to clear these projects off her workload.
No release date has been announced for People We Meet on Vacation at this time.

These included nods for stars Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman, Aja Naomi King, and Millicent Shelton. The Apple TV+ series, which was recognized with a nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, mirrors the book’s narrative. Both tell the story of chemist Elizabeth Zott (portrayed by Brie Larson) as she experiences heartache, confronts misogyny, and eventually rises to fame as a cooking show host in 1960s California.
Following its debut in 2024, “Shōgun” became the first Japanese-language series to receive a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, with a total of 25 nominations at the 2024 Emmys. The series is adapted from Brian Stelter’s 2013 non-fiction book “Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV,” offering viewers an intimate glimpse into the world of morning television. Over the course of its run, it has amassed 27 nominations and even scored a 2020 win for Billy Crudup in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
In the year 2024, the Netflix miniseries “Ripley” was released, based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 psychological thriller, “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” Andrew Scott portrays the cunning protagonist, Tom Ripley, a con artist living in 1960s New York City. Hired by a wealthy shipping magnate to convince his son Dickie (Johnny Flynn) to abandon his jet-set lifestyle in Europe and return to America, Ripley’s actions take a darker turn as the story unfolds. The series also features Dakota Fanning in a supporting role. “Ripley” garnered 13 Emmy nominations in 2024, including nods for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Scott), and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Fanning).

By 2023, it had been transformed into a successful movie on Amazon Prime, telling the tale of romance between the fictional son of the U.S. President (portrayed by Taylor Zakhar Perez) and the Prince of England (Nicholas Galitzine). This film received a nomination for Outstanding Television Movie at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
In Ryan Murphy’s anthology series titled “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” set to air in 2024, the narrative unfolds around Truman Capote, portrayed by Tom Hollander, who damaged his relationships with a circle of New York City high society women, affectionately referred to as “The Swans.” This was due to his publication of thinly disguised accounts of them in a 1975 article for Esquire. The show is based on Laurence Leamer’s 2021 book, “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era,” and features a star-studded cast including Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny, Calista Flockhart, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, and the late Treat Williams. The second season garnered 10 Emmy nominations in 2024, with acting nods for Hollander, Watts, Williams, and Lane.
According to the 2008 novel titled “Fellow Travelers,” penned by Thomas Mallon, the upcoming 2023 TV series of the same name follows the story of Hawkins Fuller (portrayed by Matt Bomer) and Timothy Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey). These characters experience a tumultuous relationship that unfolds from the 1950s to the 1980s. Both actors, Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey, earned Emmy acting nominations for their performances in the Showtime miniseries. Bomer was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, while Bailey received a nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
At the close of 2020, Netflix’s portrayal of Julia Quinn’s romance novel series, “Bridgerton,” became a significant cultural hit. This popularity stemmed from various factors: a multicultural cast, an impressive musical score, and some sensual love scenes that kept viewers hooked on the show. Furthermore, it garnered widespread praise, securing a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2021 Emmys.
This dramatic series, brimming with epic clashes and tragic love stories, originates from the widely acclaimed book series penned by George R.R Martin. Despite the novels’ individual success, the TV adaptation has attracted a global fanbase, even captivating those who aren’t typically enthusiasts of the original work. Over an impressive span of eight seasons, this HBO production amassed 58 Emmy Awards, making it the most award-winning drama series in history. Though opinions are split on the contentious finale, which deviated from Martin’s plan to deliver a unique conclusion, the show will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most revered productions ever made.
The television series adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s acclaimed novel, boasting the same title, drew big-name actors to the small screen. Stars like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, and Laura Dern took up roles in the story of five women implicated in a murder investigation, each claiming their spot in an exclusive lineup. As gripping as the book, the first season garnered eight Primetime Emmy Awards and even attracted Meryl Streep to join for a significant role in the second season. Moriarty collaborated on the second season, shaping it despite no more source material being available. Though not as universally adored as the first, season two still managed to secure nominations for Meryl Streep and Laura Dern in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
The “Three-Body Problem” television series, airing on Netflix, received six Emmy nominations for the year 2024, among them a highly desired Outstanding Drama Series nod. This globally set series (in the U.K. and China) focuses on a team of scientists unraveling an alien enigma and confronting a planetary peril. The show is adapted from Liu Cixin’s book series “Remembrance of Earth’s Past,” with the trilogy beginning in 2006, featuring “The Three-Body Problem.” Cixin continued the story with “The Dark Forest” in 2008 and concluded it with “Death’s End” in 2010.
In 2022, the British spy thriller “Slow Horses” made its debut on Apple TV+, but it was during its third season (released in 2024) that the series garnered significant attention from Emmy voters, earning a total of nine nominations. These included nods for Outstanding Drama Series as well as individual acting categories such as Lead Actor and Supporting Actor for stars Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden respectively. The show is adapted from Mick Herron’s “Slough House” spy novel series, with the first book, “Slow Horses,” published in 2010. As of now, there are eight books in this series, with the latest addition, “Bad Actors,” released in 2023.
The series “Palm Royale,” which made its premiere, garnered three Emmy nominations for 2024 in the categories of Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Kristen Wiig), and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Carol Burnett). Despite being adapted from the 2018 book “Mr. & Mrs. American Pie” by Juliet McDaniel, the Apple TV+ show takes a significantly different path from its original material. The story is set in the late ’60s and follows Kristen Wiig’s character, Maxine Simmons, who was once a beauty pageant queen, as she endeavors to infiltrate Florida’s Palm Beach high society. In contrast, the book portrays Maxine being banished from Scottsdale, Ariz., instead of Palm Springs, following an intoxicated outburst at Thanksgiving after her husband discloses he intends to leave her for his secretary.
In 2024, Lily Gladstone was nominated for an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Emmy Award for her role in the Hulu miniseries titled “Under The Bridge.” This series is adapted from Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 true crime book of the same name. The story follows the tragic events surrounding the murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk by a group of eight peers that took place in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, in 1997.
In 2024, a historical black comedy miniseries titled “The Sympathizer” will be airing. This series is an adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from 2015, bearing the same name. Set at the tail end of the Vietnam War, the story revolves around a Vietnamese spy who escapes to a U.S. refugee camp and faces challenges as he secretly continues to work for the Viet Cong. In the 2024 Emmys, Robert Downey Jr., who played five different roles in this series, won an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award.
Experiencing a captivating journey as a lifestyle connoisseur, I must recommend delving into “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a riveting adaptation that premiered on Hulu back in 2017. Originally based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel from 1985, this series unfolds within the oppressive society of Gilead, birthed from a second American Civil War. However, the narrative has evolved far beyond its literary roots, chronicling the resilient story of June Osborne, portrayed brilliantly by Elisabeth Moss, who is not just a handmaid in name but in spirit as well, and her unrelenting pursuit for independence. This gripping series has garnered numerous Emmy Awards, even claiming the Outstanding Drama Series title during its inaugural season.
Originally based on Alex Haley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “Roots: The Saga of an American Family,” published in 1976, this groundbreaking mini-series made its debut a year later on ABC. Starring LeVar Burton, it quickly became a cultural sensation, garnering nine Emmys and a Peabody Award, along with record-breaking ratings. The finale remains the second-most-watched series finale in U.S. TV history. A remake titled “Roots” was released in 2016, featuring Malachi Kirby and Anika Noni Rose.
Among the fascinating characters in this long-running supernatural drama are a psychic waitress and vampires sporting southern accents. The show, starring real-life couple Anna Pacquin and Stephen Moyer, is an adaptation of Charlaine Harris’s “The Southern Vampire Mysteries” series. Set in Louisiana, it revolves around a small town, and after seven seasons, it concluded in 2014. Fans will always appreciate the gift of glimpsing Alexander Skarsgård and Joe Manganiello in their full glory throughout its run.
As a devoted admirer, I found myself captivated by a contemporary adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s timeless detective series, produced in the UK and featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in lead roles. This dramatic reimagining wasn’t just popular within its native country, but it garnered international acclaim, with fans spanning across continents, including the United States where it clinched the award for Best Television Film at the 2016 Emmys.
This thrilling series, set in the backdrop of historical events, is penned by author Diana Gabaldon. The story revolves around time travel, resistance, and a complex romantic entanglement. Caitriona Balfe portrays a nurse who journeys to another era and finds herself caught in a love triangle with a free-spirited Scottish highlander, played by Sam Heughan, even though she is married in her own time.
In 2014, the novel “You Should Have Known” by Jean Hanff Korelitz served as inspiration for The Undoing. This series brought Nicole Kidman back to the forefront of a gripping murder investigation. Grace Fraser, portrayed by Kidman, finds her life in disarray when her husband, Jonathan (played by Hugh Grant), becomes a prime suspect in the killing of Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis).
Although the final episode sparked mixed emotions among viewers, there was universal agreement that Nicole Kidman’s costumes were top-notch throughout the series.
The crime drama centered around Dexter Morgan, portrayed by Michael C. Hall, who is a blood splatter analyst during the day but a nighttime serial killer, was initially inspired by books written by Jeff Lindsay. Over its eight-season run on Showtime, this series developed a dedicated fanbase and received 23 Emmy nominations. However, the final episode’s conclusion was not an easy feat to pull off.
In 2021, the creative minds behind the project decided to give another try at concluding Dexter’s tale in a special, self-contained series called “Dexter: New Blood“.
The critically acclaimed Netflix production, “Orange is the New Black,” derived inspiration from the memoir of author Piper Kerman titled “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.” The show quickly gained popularity among audiences who admired its blend of dry wit and emotionally charged narratives. Characters such as Suzanne (portrayed by Uzo Aduba), Sophia (Laverne Cox), Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) and the beloved Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley) were particularly well-received. After seven compelling seasons, the series concluded in 2019, leaving viewers to say goodbye to Litchfield Penitentiary.
In the realm of television drama, prior to the captivating presence of Coach Taylor, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, there was a film adaptation featuring Billy Bob Thornton in the same role. However, it wasn’t until 2006 that H.G. Bissinger’s non-fiction book “Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream” graced our screens, converting even the most ardent football skeptics. Among the remarkable cast, Kyle Chandler was joined by Connie Britton, Minka Kelly, Scott Porter, Michael B. Jordan, and everyone’s beloved rogue, Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins. Let’s echo this timeless phrase together, “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts…
Another Liane Moriarty adaptation! In 2021, Nicole Kidman and David E. Kelley collaborated once more to bring Moriarty’s 2018 novel Nine Perfect Strangers to life. Debuting on Hulu, the series followed Masha Dmitrichenko (Kidman), a wellness retreat guru ready to transform the lives of nine, wait for it, strangers, including Frances (Melissa McCarthy), Lars (Luke Evans), Tony (Bobby Cannavale), Carmel (Regina Hall), Napoleon (Michael Shannon), Jessica (Samara Weaving), Ben (Melvin Gregg), Heather (Asher Keddie) and Zoe (Grace Van Patten).
This television series, penned by author Cecily von Ziegesar from the Upper East Side, stood as a symbolic portrayal of the clandestine lifestyles of young New York City aristocrats. Regardless if you identified more with Blair (Leighton Meester) or Serena (Blake Lively), it’s hard to deny that the stylish cast ignited a touch of envy in viewers throughout its six-season run on The CW.
The popular book series penned by author Sara Shepard became a much-loved guilty pleasure TV show for viewers nationwide. The trendy group starring Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson, and Troian Bellisario kept fans at the brink of suspense throughout its run. Over seven seasons on Freeform, PLL aimed to resolve all the mysteries posed by its dedicated fan base as the conclusion approached. Whether the explanations provided were satisfactory is a matter for debate.
The SyFy series “The Magicians,” based on Lev Grossman’s acclaimed book trilogy, offers a peek into the enchanting universe of Brakebills University students. These characters face the usual college struggles (such as complicated relationships and substance abuse issues) while also mastering their magical abilities – making their lives even more intricate. Across five seasons, the stakes escalated significantly, often requiring the protagonists to rescue the multiverse or magic itself. (Quite a casual undertaking, isn’t it?) Yet one aspect remained constant: The series never failed to deliver an exceptional musical episode.
The attractive ensemble, featuring Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Kat Graham, and Ian Somerhalder, played a significant role in making this supernatural TV series on The CW a massive success. Fans of L.J. Smith’s book series found their beloved characters brought to vivid life in the captivating drama, which ran for eight seasons before concluding in 2017.
