As a seasoned movie buff with a soft spot for British dramas and a keen eye for stellar castings, I am beyond thrilled about Sally Wainwright’s new series, Riot Women. With a lineup that reads like a who’s-who of talented actresses, this series promises to be a powerhouse of emotion, music, and female empowerment.
In the world of Sally Wainwright’s upcoming drama series, Riot Women, I find myself part of an illustrious ensemble. Faces that I recognize from previous works grace the forefront of this captivating production.
Joanna Scanlan, Rosalie Craig, Tamsin Greig, Lorraine Ashbourne, Amelia Bullmore, Anne Reid, Sue Johnston, Taj Atwal, and Chandeep Uppal are set as the main cast for the show titled “Riot Women.
Riot Women plunge into the realm of five ladies, accompanied by two boisterous chorus members, who join forces to form an impromptu punk rock group and compete in a local talent show.
As they pen down their initial unique composition, they find themselves with ample thoughts to express – and this medium serves as their means of expression!
In summary, the series plot unfolds as follows: “While balancing challenging careers, adult children, intricate family dynamics, absent spouses, and tumultuous romances, the group serves as a catalyst for transformation, causing them to reconsider their lives and beliefs entirely.
The six-episode show serves as an affirmation of the strength found in friendships, music, and the unyielding spirit of women who defy age and societal norms, choosing instead to make their voices heard.
As the story unfolds (in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire), it becomes clear that their bond is not only about music; rather, an ancient, deeply buried secret starts to emerge, one that unforeseeably tangles Kitty and Beth, the band’s unexpected creative geniuses, in a complicated triangle, potentially shredding everything asunder.
Joanna Scanlan from “The Thick of It,” Rosalie Craig known for “Moonflower Murders,” Tamsin Greig famous for “Friday Night Dinner,” Lorraine Ashbourne recognized by “Sherwood,” and Amelia Bullmore who is well-known for “The Buccaneers” will take on the roles of Beth, Kitty, Holly, Jess, and Yvonne respectively.
In a new production titled “The Sixth Commandment,” Anne Reid will be playing the character Nancy, while Sue Johnston takes on the role of Aunt Mary. Additionally, Peter Davison from “Doctor Who”, Claire Skinner known for her work in “Outnumbered”, and Angel Coulby who starred in “Merlin” are also part of the cast.
New cast members join the production, among them are Jonny Green from White Lines, Ellise Chappell of Yesterday, Macy Jacob Seelochan who appeared in Shadow and Bone, Tony Hirst known for his role in Hollyoaks, Shannon Lavelle starring in Hamlin, Amit Shah famous for Happy Valley, Rick Warden recognized from Red Eye, and Ben Batt seen on Domina.
Lastly, we have Natalia Tena (known for Harry Potter), Melanie La Barrie (famous for Juliet), Oliver Huntingdon (recognized in Sherwood), Richard Fleeshman (The Sandman), Olwen May (A Very British Scandal), Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey), and Nicholas Gleaves (Bodyguard).
Previously, Wainwright discussed the upcoming series with the Halifax Courier. She elaborated on the main characters, stating: “They are filled with anger, and they will express this anger through songs about being angry, being of a particular age, and dealing with everything that comes along with that age, including menopause happening simultaneously.
They create a punk rock group as an outlet for expressing their frustration. Essentially, it’s my way of venting, you could say! One of our songs is titled “Seeing Red,” which deals with the topic of HRT. Writing it has been quite enjoyable for me.
In an interview regarding the script, Wainwright expressed that she’s “never been more thrilled about something I’ve written compared to this.
