As a seasoned DC fan with a passion for unconventional tales and a soft spot for characters living on the edge, I am beyond excited about the upcoming “Challengers of the Unknown” series! The team’s history, rooted in Jack Kirby’s genius mind, has always intrigued me, and I can’t wait to see how Christopher Cantwell and Sean Izaakse breathe new life into these iconic adventurers.
DC’s All In initiative is making its way through time and dimensions. Recently, DC revealed a new five-issue limited series titled “Challengers of the Unknown.” This upcoming series will be penned by Christopher Cantwell (known for his work on “Iron Man” and “Plastic Man No More”) with artwork by Sean Izaakse (renowned for his work on “Green Arrow” and “Thunderbolts”). The debut issue of “Challengers of the Unknown” will showcase a main cover by Mike Deodato Jr., alongside variant covers from series artist Izaakse, Romulo Fajardo Jr., Taurin Clarke, Danny Earls, as well as foil and character-design variants from Gleb Melnikov and Dan Mora respectively.
In “Challengers of the Unknown,” Ace Morgan, June Robbins, Prof Haley, Red Ryan, and Rocky Davis – a group of adventurers living on borrowed time – manage the day-to-day activities at the Justice League’s space station, Watchtower, which orbits Earth. They work alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and other members of the League to close the rifts that pose a threat to the galaxy. However, an ominous adversary from the Challengers’ past remains hidden, and its link to the Darkseid wave could place not just the Challengers, but the entire DC Universe on borrowed time.
Who Are DC’s Challengers of the Unknown?
Originating in 1957’s Showcase #6 by Jack Kirby (and potentially Dave Wood or Joe Simon), the band of daring explorers was born. This dynamic quintet included Kyle “Ace” Morgan, Matthew “Red” Ryan, Leslie “Rocky” Davis, Walter Mark “Prof” Haley, and later June Robbins. After a close call with death during a plane crash, they found themselves living on an extended lease of life, which inspired them to embark on extraordinary journeys. Throughout the years, they encountered numerous unusual perils while navigating the allure of fame.
Over time, the Team of the Unknown has been revived on various occasions, first through their own series and then in DC collection books. The latest version of this team was reintroduced as New Challengers in May 2018. Moreover, they were also featured in a humorous context in the 2018 movie, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, making an appearance even in the film’s after-credits scene.
What Is DC All In?
Hey there fellow gamers! Just wanted to share some exciting news about the upcoming changes in the DC universe I’ve been eagerly waiting for. This summer, we’re diving headfirst into a refreshed “Absolute” universe filled with familiar faces from our favorite DC characters. Not only that, but we’ll also continue to get our hands on core titles, each offering fresh perspectives and welcoming newcomers to join the action.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel that the genesis of this Absolute Universe evokes the same sense of anticipation as returning to my beloved DC Comics. The upcoming event, DC All In, presents an exceptional opportunity for both newcomers and long-absent fans alike to immerse themselves in captivating narratives they’ll cherish, while also offering glimpses into the exciting new paths that the main DC series lineup is about to embark on. Snyder expressed this sentiment when the line was initially unveiled.
You can grab a copy of issue #1 of “Challengers of the Unknown” from comic book stores nationwide on Wednesday, December 18th.
