All Creatures welcomes a familiar face back to Darrowby – but he’s conflicted

As a war veteran and a devoted fan of All Creatures Great and Small, I have to say that tonight’s episode was a rollercoaster of emotions. The absence of James and Tristan was palpable, but their eventual returns were nothing short of heartwarming.

Tonight on Thursday, 19th September, All Creatures Great and Small made its comeback for season 5, yet there were a few crucial individuals absent from Skeldale House initially.

Presently, Tristan is stationed in Egypt, serving within the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. The story commenced with James situated at RAF Abingdon, immersed in his pilot training.

With the swift progression of the Nazi forces, the veteran and his team found themselves unexpectedly ready for their initial long journey towards Scotland much earlier than anticipated. This mission might involve them coming across hostile enemy fire.

But just as James was about to take to the skies, he collapsed and was rushed to the medical wing.

Rather than being brought down by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), he was incapacitated due to a bacterial illness called brucellosis, which he contracted a year ago while treating a diseased herd of animals.

Following a period of doubt regarding his aviation career, James’s supervisor determined he was not suitable for flying duties. At first, James disagreed with this decision, but was subsequently instructed to perform manual labor instead.

When it was evident that I was better suited for tasks other than ditch-digging, as my skills seemed more valuable in another location following the assistance with a cow delivery, I was released and granted permission to head back to Darrowby.

His commander acknowledged, “Given your expertise, it’s clear that you are an exceptional veterinarian.” He continued, “It seems there aren’t many professionals like you available at the moment.

However, despite his eventual joy at being reunited with Helen and baby Jimmy, James seemed torn or uncertain at first.

Beyond simply desiring to contribute, he felt it was his responsibility – “I have an obligation. I owe it to these crew members, I cannot abandon them at this time” – as he sincerely believed that if he had been piloting the plane, perhaps they wouldn’t have been forced into a dangerous situation and lives might not have been lost.

Fate seemed to have other plans for me, steering me away from my intended path and back towards Skeldale House. And boy, did they give me a warm reception upon my return!

As for Tristan, he’s finally set to return later this season following his season 4 absence.

Nicholas Ralph mentioned that the program was incomplete without Tristan and he was glad to have him back. He also enjoys collaborating with Callum, and their shared scenes were delightful and full of joy.

He went on to say that “Tristan, as a character, means so much to so many people within the house, so it was a joy having him back”.

Watching them work together with Carmody, especially since they’re such contrasting personalities, is truly entertaining,” he noted. “Moreover, Callum has an infectious humor; he’s simply delightful to be around, whether on or off the set. It was a genuine pleasure.
