Miro Requests AEW Release: Will He Return to WWE?

As a longtime fan who has witnessed Miro’s incredible journey from Rusev to The Bulgarian Brute, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness at his current predicament with AEW. It seems that the creative differences have left this dynamic wrestler feeling sidelined and frustrated, much like a well-cooked shish kebab without its saucy dipping side.

Miro has not been seen on AEW programming in nearly one year. The former AEW TNT Champion last competed at AEW Worlds End 2023, defeating Andrade El Idolo in what ended up being Andrade’s final AEW match. Miro’s AEW absence has revolved around creative clashes, as the Bulgarian Brute has reportedly turned down numerous storyline pitches while AEW has also denied some of his requested feuds and matches. This misalignment has been consistent between Miro and AEW for just about his entire four-year run with the company, as he has only competed in 36 matches since signing with AEW in September 2020.

Miro Requests Release From AEW

Miro Requests AEW Release: Will He Return to WWE?

The Redeemer is looking to get out of his AEW contract.

According to Fightful Select, Miro has asked for his departure from All Elite Wrestling. It’s uncertain if this request has been approved as of now.

Originally, Miro’s contract with the company was due to end in Spring 2022. However, around that time, he extended his deal for a period of four years, keeping him with AEW until Spring 2026. It is notable that Miro is now making millions.

2024 finds Miro still waiting for his next wrestling match, following his triumph over Andrade El Idolo at the AEW Worlds End 2023 event. An unexpected injury kept him out of action longer than anticipated by AEW. However, Miro has been in good health for quite a while now. The initial plan was to involve him in the Casino Gauntlet Match at AEW ALL IN: London in August, but these plans fell through. Miro had also proposed teaming up with Jon Moxley earlier this year, though it’s uncertain if that potential rivalry would have taken place when Moxley held the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship or as a regular non-title feud between the two. It seems there were creative differences between Miro and AEW that prevented them from aligning effectively.

Through his tenure with AEW so far, many have characterized Miro’s journey as untapped potential. Initially introduced as “The Best Man” for Kip Sabian’s wedding, he eventually found his stride becoming the AEW TNT Champion, holding the title for four months and earning praise for elevating the young championship’s prestige. Following his loss of the AEW TNT Title, Miro transitioned to the AEW World Championship scene, reaching the finals of an eliminator tournament at AEW Full Gear 2021. However, he came up short against Bryan Danielson and has since seemed somewhat adrift in terms of direction.

Before moving to AEW, Miro’s entire wrestling career was spent within the WWE, a period that lasted over a decade. During this time, he wrestled under Vince McMahon’s company as Rusev, making an impact with an undefeated streak and a prolonged United States Championship reign. While working there, Rusev had notable rivalries with wrestlers such as John Cena and Roman Reigns. In April 2020, Rusev was let go by WWE during the COVID-19 layoffs.
