As a lifelong Transformers fan, I must say that the latest prequel film, Transformers One, has truly captured my heart and ignited my childhood memories. The narrative twist of the Quintessons being the real rulers of Cybertron is both intriguing and unsettling, much like a squid-tentacle creature lurking in the depths of the galaxy.
As a gaming enthusiast diving into the world of Transformers, I’ve just learned that “Transformers One” is a prequel taking us back to the formative days on the planet Cybertron. In this epic tale, we witness the genesis of the Autobots and Decepticons, two factions born out of a colossal battle for their homeworld. The leaders who would later become Optimus Prime (Orion Pax, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (D-16, played by Brian Tyree Henry), were then just ordinary miners, yearning to unlock their full transformative potential. However, when Orion insists on a quest to find the elusive Matrix of Leadership, he and D-16 stumble upon a mind-boggling truth that challenges the very foundations of Cybertron’s social structure.
WARNING: MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW!!!
In the previews for Transformers One, it has been hinted at that there is another extraterrestrial race in the movie. This notion is indeed accurate, as the movie eventually unveils the Quintessons as the true rulers of Cybertron. The characters Orion Pax and D-16 are forced to work and prevented from transforming, all so that the leaders on Cybertron can provide the Quintessons with Energon. In return for this arrangement, they are allowed to maintain their positions of power.
Are the Quintessons portrayed as a formidable, hybrid organic-technological species with elongated, cephalopod-like appendages. However, one might question the loyalty of the original Transformer to the established lore of the franchise.
Transformers: The Quintessons’ Franchise History Explained
Just as with numerous aspects of the Transformers universe, the tale of the Quintessons has undergone multiple revisions. They made their debut during the original Transformers era (G1), showing up in Transformers: The Movie (1986). In this film, they were depicted as a race of multi-faced mechanical beings hailing from the nightmarish planet Quintessa. They conducted sham trials and brutally executed their captives by feeding them to the Sharkticons. Although their screen time was limited in the movie, their role in Transformers lore expanded significantly over time.
In various revisions of the tale, it’s been disclosed that the Quintessons are either the builders of Cybertron and the Transformers (with the Decepticons being their weapons for war), or an alien mechanical race who viewed the Cybertronians as a less-developed species and subjugated them. In both scenarios, the narrative’s foundation remains consistent: The Quintessons employ deceit and trickery to maintain control over the Cybertonians, forcing them to work or fight for amusement until the Transformers learn the skill of transformation and expel the Quintessons from Cybertron. Subsequently, the story’s complexity deepens, with the Quintessons devising strategies such as hiding on their home planet, Quintessa, and manipulating Optimus Prime through the Matrix of Leadership to further their objectives.
In essence, Transformers One is offering a unique take on the Transformers universe history involving the Quintessons and Cybertronians, with a revamped appearance for the Quintessons that blends organic and technological elements. As the first film concludes, it sets up the ongoing conflict over Cybertron, where the Cybertronians engage in war with the Quintessons. This is followed by the traditional Cybertronian Civil War between Autobots and Decepticons, vying for control of their planet. It seems like we’re in store for an exciting trilogy storyline.
Transformers One is now playing in theaters.
