As a long-time fan of the Kingdom Hearts series who has spent countless hours navigating its labyrinthine storyline and playing through spinoffs that often feel like necessary evils to fully understand the lore, I can’t help but feel a renewed sense of excitement about the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4. Tetsuya Nomura’s announcement that this new installment is designed as a “reset” for the series has me hopeful that newcomers will finally be able to easily jump into the world of Disney and Final Fantasy without needing a PhD in Kingdom Hearts lore.
As a long-time fan of the Kingdom Hearts universe, I’ve always found it challenging for newcomers to dive into this complex world due to its intricate storyline that spans across various spinoffs, some of which are pivotal to the overall narrative. However, with the announcement of Kingdom Hearts 4, it appears Square Enix is making a conscious effort to streamline the series and make it more accessible for new players.
As I shared in a recent chat with Young Jump, the creative director and brainchild behind it all, Tetsuya Nomura, Kingdom Hearts 4 (alongside our mobile game, Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link) is being carefully crafted as a “reboot” to make it more inviting for newcomers to join the adventure.
Nomura stated through GamesRadar that he views ‘Missing Link’ and ‘4’ as a fresh start. He aimed to conclude it with ‘3’, or more accurately, reset it. To facilitate this, he brought in new writers and even designed a new logo to make it simpler for newcomers to understand and jump into the series.
Nomura further explained that the upcoming action RPG will continue the storyline from Kingdom Hearts 3, but it’s designed with the aim that even those who haven’t played earlier games can easily join in this time, as there will still be connections for long-time fans to grasp.
In simpler terms, the creator of Kingdom Hearts 3 stated (via @aitaikimochi on Twitter) that Sora’s ending is designed to set up a fresh start for the story in Kingdom Hearts 4. This approach should make it simpler for newcomers to jump into the story from Kingdom Hearts 4, while still allowing long-time fans of the series to have an “ah, so that’s why” moment. They are developing this game with the intention that both veterans and new players can find enjoyment in it.
The game titled “Kingdom Hearts 4” was officially unveiled in the year 2022; however, since then, there hasn’t been much information disclosed about it. Previous leaks hint towards a potential launch in the year 2025.
