Paul Merson is highly competitive – but ready to ‘bite his tongue’ on Strictly

As a long-time sports enthusiast and admirer of Paul Merson’s illustrious career, it’s fascinating to see him embark on this new journey as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. The competitive spirit that drove him throughout his footballing days seems undiminished, even when faced with the unfamiliar world of dance.

Former footballer, manager, and pundit Paul Merson is stepping into the world of dance, partnering with professional dancer Karen Hauer for the 20th anniversary season of Strictly Come Dancing.

Despite having limited experience as a dancer, having danced just three times in total, he’s quite competitive. He’s uncertain about managing the situation where he won’t be the top player on the field, given his past performance.

Paul, are you competitive?

As a Seasoned Movie Goer, Winning, even during playful soccer matches with my little one in our backyard, holds a special appeal for me. The moment he dashes towards me, tears streaming down his face because I’ve bested him once more, is the bittersweet reminder of my unyielding competitiveness. Yet, this persisting desire to excel has always been my reality – be it on the soccer field or as part of a winning team. It’s akin to being modest Iceland, unexpectedly qualifying for the World Cup.

Are you the first person on the dance floor if there’s an opportunity?

Paul: I’ve only ever danced three times — this is no joke — at my three weddings.

You always feel like someone is watching you, like, “I’m not going to let myself look like a fool.” The Jerk with Steve Martin is my rhythm. Even when I was dancing with Karen and we did a clap, I clapped ahead of time.

On the day of the FA Cup final, I played before an audience of 100,000 people – a number that left me more jittery than ever before in my career. It was almost unbelievable how anxious I felt just moments ago, as we stepped onto the dance floor with the crowd cheering for the launch show.

I’m feeling quite anxious, but a significant advantage for me is that I’ve had plenty of experience with live television broadcasts. This means I won’t let the thought of viewers at home unsettle me.

How does it feel trading Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday for Strictly on Saturdays?

Paul: There have been times when I was offered Strictly Come Dancing, but this seemed like the perfect opportunity. I wasn’t keen on bringing it up with my boss because I feel that weekend work interferes with my regular duties as they are my source of income. Nevertheless, Sky allowed me to participate and I am thankful for the chance.

It’s my mother who inspired me to accomplish this feat, as without my father’s influence, I wouldn’t have become a footballer. My dad accompanied me to various venues where I played football. Unfortunately, my mum often goes unrecognized for her contributions, even though she was always there by my side. This is a gesture I am doing in appreciation of my mother.

She absolutely loves the show. She keeps on going on about it all the time. It’s getting on my nerves. I’ve never talked to my mum so much!

What are your strengths as a couple so far?

Karen’s comment: It’s fantastic that he’s an athlete since it means he’s disciplined and organized. Plus, he’s quite playful. I believe Paul will connect well with the viewers. He’s got a great sense of humor, which is exactly what I need. When we dance, people not only smile but also laugh along – not at us, but with us. We’re going to bring joy to the nation.

How does the training compare to when you were training in football?

Paul: For quite a while now, I haven’t been doing much exercise, but when I used to play football regularly, it was always in the mornings. Mornings suit me best because I prefer to start my day fresh. As the afternoon rolls around, I tend to feel increasingly fatigued, so I’ve made a habit of sticking with this routine. My feet have been my essential instruments throughout my life, and I’ve always taken good care of them. They’re crucial for me.

Will you be talking back to any of the judges?

Paul: Initially, when I joined Sky as a commentator, I was quite blunt and truthful in my comments. Now, this is me returning the favor. I’ll hold back my criticisms because I can’t dish them out without expecting some of it to come back to me!

Will there be any famous faces watching you?

Paul: I’m close pals with Elton John. We attended his show at Vicarage Road together with my wife, Kate. Before the concert, we even had a chance to meet him backstage. During one of his songs, he dedicated it to “Kate and Paul.” If I make it to the finals, I might request him to perform on Strictly Come Dancing… And no, I’m not kidding about that!

Karen: That would get you a 10!

What Strictly predictions have you got for yourself?

Paul: During my time at Arsenal, we unfortunately lost to Wrexham in the FA Cup. Surprises can certainly occur, as they’ve been performing well lately, but when we faced them, they weren’t at their best. Oh, by the way, I hope you’ll support Wrexham! I have a soft spot for them; they’re a great group of people.
