Shayne Ward on how Strictly compares to The X Factor and eyeing up the Glitterball trophy

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of TV viewing under my belt, I can confidently say that Shayne Ward’s journey on Strictly Come Dancing is nothing short of captivating. His track record, which includes winning The X Factor and gracing the screens of Coronation Street, pales in comparison to the sheer magnitude of this dance-centric juggernaut.

After triumphing on a popular Saturday night talent show (The X Factor), Shayne Ward now aims for another victory as a potential Strictly Come Dancing champion. The actor-singer is optimistic about his chances, with dance partner Nancy Xu by his side, stating that he’s determined to come out on top in the competition.

Hi Shayne, given your impressive history – triumphing at The X Factor back in 2005, which was a massive hit on television, and then moving on to star in our most popular daytime soap opera, Coronation Street – could you share your thoughts on how Strictly compares?

Shayne Ward: This world is absolutely vastly different. Over the years, I’ve seen how popular the show has been. And now that I’m part of it, it’s enormous. I knew it was a complex entity. It’s not just a machine; it’s more like a colossal, beautiful beast. I can’t quite put it into words.

Do you feel very little because it’s so big?

Shayne: Consider the vast lake; we’re merely small fishes swimming within it. Once we dive in, there’s no choice but to keep moving along. The train never halts.

Do you think you’ll make it to Blackpool?

Shayne: That’s what we envision.

How much dancing have you done prior to taking part?

Shayne: Dancing has always been something that brings me joy, whether it’s in a music video, at the pub with family, or even playfully with my kids in the morning. But performing choreographed dance routines on television for millions to see alongside an exceptional dancer like Nancy is quite a test! I’m excited to push my physical abilities and find out what I’m truly capable of.

Nancy, what are Shane’s biggest strengths as a partner going into the competition?

When he participates in something, he does so wholeheartedly with all his effort. He always gives his best. It can be challenging to grasp someone right away when you first meet them. However, we mentioned the other day on the dance floor that there’s a natural compatibility between us. We don’t have to make an effort to communicate with each other because the bond, it seems, already exists.

How will you communicate with each other if things are going wrong?

Nancy: We do have our moments.

Shayne: We do, yeah. We both love the Minions. It’s our little language between us.

So, if you’re getting a bit stressed, you just start squeaking?

Shayne suggests that when feeling overwhelmed or stressed, simply make a squeaking sound. This action serves as a reminder to find a moment of clarity, taking a breath, and reassuring oneself that everything is alright.

Nancy: I really value Shayne’s honesty; it puts me at ease. I admire how he doesn’t hold back, there’s no barrier between him and his words.

Shayne, you’ve had some challenging judges in your past, such as a stern Simon Cowell. So, will Craig be an easy ride compared to them?

Shayne often notes that each show seems to have a character akin to Mr Nasty, and he believes Craig embodies this role exceptionally well. While the character can sometimes overdramatize, everything Craig says is rooted in his desire to assist. The advice he offers is invaluable, so it’s wise to make good use of it. Whenever Craig speaks, Shayne agrees wholeheartedly, saying something like “Absolutely spot on! You’re right.

There’s been quite a bit of discussion regarding the competitive nature of the dancers. Could you tell me about your objectives for this year’s competition, Nancy?

Nancy: Essentially, it’s a competition, but I usually view it as more of an entertaining spectacle. There’s a man beside me who has immense potential, and I yearn for him to tap into that potential gradually, week by week. I want him to experience the thrill, the sense of conquest, and enjoy the journey. I want him to have fun, explore diverse characters and dance styles, and create lasting memories in our partnership.

Shayne, you’ve mentioned your family. Is this something you want for them as much as for yourself?

As a movie lover, I can’t help but marvel at this: “See what I’ve immersed myself into. Observe the accomplishments that have unfolded. I dove headfirst, with passion, to create something you could be proud of.” It’s all about keeping that vision in mind.

I’m going to ask you to call it – where are you going to come in the contest?

Nancy: Golly gosh. I would put the money on him.

As a fervent movie critic, let me express my unabashed ambition: I’m here not just to compete, but to conquer. My ultimate goal is to reach the pinnacle of this competition. I aim to enjoy every moment of this journey, but my heart yearns for the grand finale – to stand there, triumphantly holding the coveted trophy alongside Nancy.

Who’s your biggest threat?

Shayne: Ourselves.

Nancy: It’s a brilliant approach! The competition you see is just in your mind. It’s about questioning yourself – “Why didn’t I do it right? Why couldn’t I succeed?” You’re not competing with others; instead, you’re only competing against yourself. This is what Shayne grasped instantly. And as for his goal, I make it my own too.
