Transformers One Reveals Optimus Prime's Unlikely Origin

As a gamer with decades of Transformers lore under my belt, I must admit that the new animated film “Transformers One” has truly shaken up my understanding of the franchise. The fresh take on Optimus Prime’s origin story is nothing short of groundbreaking.

In a fresh and innovative reboot, Transformers One resets the storyline of the Transformers franchise anew, offering a revised account of Optimus Prime’s origins that even long-time fans may find surprising. Over the years, Optimus Prime has been a constant and cherished figure in the Transformers universe across movies, TV shows, video games, toys, and more, serving as the central hero and the leader of the Autobots. His unwavering commitment to battling Megatron to safeguard Cybertron, and later Earth, is a tale that has been told for decades in various media forms.

In a completely fresh take for me as a die-hard fan, the latest Transformers animated movie spins the narrative in an entirely new direction and resets the storyline from ground zero. This time around, we delve into Optimus Prime’s past, uncovering who he was before he ascended to the role fans have grown to love. With Chris Hemsworth lending his voice to Orion Pax, the film chronicles his journey as he gradually uncovers the dark secrets of his life on Cybertron and eventually rises to save all other robots from their heavy burden, paving the way for their future transformation into Autobots.

Transformers One: Who Is Orion Pax?

Orion Pax is a robot who, unlike other Transformers on Cybertron, doesn’t seem to have a mechanism for transformation. Instead, he and similar robots delve into the heart of Cybertron to excavate Energon, supporting Sentinel Prime in his quest for the Matrix of Leadership. The matrix is a significant artifact once possessed by the revered warriors, the Primes, who have perished in battle against the Quintessons, an ominous alien force.

In their determination to aid Sentinel in locating the Matrix of Leadership, sensing there was a grander destiny for him, they both – Sentinel and his closest companion, D-16 – venture to the surface on a quest. Along the way, they uncover a startling revelation: Sentinel Prime had deceived everyone, and they’d been mining Energon for the Quintessons under an underhanded agreement. As they came to grasp the reality of their planet, Orion obtains a core with transformative powers and starts resisting. However, it’s only much further down the line that he evolves into the Prime we’re all familiar with.

How Optimus Prime Was Born

In their dispute over how to deal with Sentinel Prime’s treachery, Orion Pax and D-16 clash, leading to D-16 inadvertently killing Orion instead of Sentinel. As a result, Orion’s lifeless form is cast into the planet’s core. Eventually, the deity of Cybertron, Primus, recognizes Orion and bestows upon him the Matrix of Leadership, elevating him as Optimus Prime. Conversely, D-16 slays Sentinel Prime and claims his former master Megatronus Prime’s equipment to assume the role of Megatron.

Here, Optimus Prime is now in his prime, exhibiting the iconic appearance and tools (like laser axes) that fans have witnessed him wield throughout the movies, TV series, and other media within the franchise. The journey to reach this point has been a bit prolonged due to the introduction of a new origin tale, but it’s evident that he triumphed over hardships, even rising from a complete demise. Over time, Optimus Prime has made an impressive comeback, transforming into the respected leader fans have grown to cherish today.
