The Penguin's Rex Calabrese Has a Major Catwoman Connection

As a seasoned gamer of DC comics and TV shows, I must say that the debut of ‘The Penguin’ has truly piqued my interest! The intricate web of characters and their connections to the larger DC universe is always a treat for fans like me.

This weekend, the initial episode of “The Penguin” will air on both HBO and Max, offering a fresh perspective on the world of Batman while subtly connecting with Catwoman. [Spoiler alert for the first episode of The Penguin! Proceed with caution if you wish to know!] In the opening sequence of “The Penguin”, we witness a strained encounter between Oz Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) and Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), who has taken over the leadership of the Falcone crime family following his father Carmine Falcone’s (John Turturro) demise. During this meeting, Oz shares a tale that significantly alters his view on the impact of crime within a city, introducing the legend of a local mobster named Rex Calabrese from his childhood neighborhood. Although Rex is not depicted in the episode, the mention of him intriguingly aligns with the broader DC comics lore, as certain comic books establish Rex as the father of Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

Who Is DC’s Rex Calabrese?

In 2014’s Batman Eternal #14, Rex Calabrese – also known as Leo Leone, or “The Lion” – was initially a prominent mobster within the Falcone gang. However, he was banished from their ranks and wound up behind bars. Over time, he shared a cell with Jim Gordon and often clashed with Oz in the criminal underworld, posing as a recurring antagonist. This character was brought to life by James Tynion IV, Scott Snyder, Ray Fawkes, John Layman, Tim Seeley, and Jason Fabok.

Of greater significance, it has been determined that Rex left his nine-year-old daughter Selina in her formative years, causing her to navigate life as a ward of the foster system. In the midst of Rex’s power struggle, he attempts to persuade Selina to ascend to the role of a criminal mastermind like herself. Although it is unlikely that this specific backstory will intertwine with the upcoming film The Penguin, as the character portrayed by Zoe Kravitz in The Batman has been confirmed to be Carmine’s illegitimate daughter, the connection between these characters remains an engaging plot point within the franchise.

What Is The Penguin About?

In the continuation of “The Batman,” penned by Matt Reeves, comes the story titled “The Penguin.” This new installment features Colin Farrell portraying Oz Cobb, Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Michael Kelly as Johnny Viti, Shohreh Aghdashloo as Nadia Maroni, Deirdre O’Connell as Francis Cobb, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, James Madio as Milos Grapa, Scott Cohen as Luca Falcone, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo, and Theo Rossi as Dr. Julian Rush.

As a game enthusiast, I got hooked into “The Penguin” series that made its debut on Max last Thursday, the 19th of September. A few days later, on Sunday, it had another premiere on HBO, the 22nd to be precise. Starting from the 29th of this month, new episodes will be dropping simultaneously on both platforms, HBO and Max. Can’t wait!
