As a fervent admirer of true crime stories and someone who has followed the Menendez brothers’ case since its inception, I find myself deeply troubled by Ryan Murphy’s portrayal of Erik and Lyle in his series “Monsters.” Erik’s recent statement expresses sentiments that resonate with me, as a viewer and a student of these tragic events.
Erik Menendez is publicly voicing his disapproval of Ryan Murphy’s television show that centers around him and his brother Lyle Menendez, who were convicted and given life sentences for the murders they committed against their parents in 1989.
Erik expressed his views on “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” through a message that Tammi Menendez posted on platform X (previously known as Twitter) on September 19, which was the day the series debuted on Netflix.
Erik stated, “I think we’ve progressed past the deceitful and damaging depictions of Lyle in the show. It appears they intentionally created a distorted image of Lyle based on lies that were prevalent throughout the series. I can hardly imagine Ryan Murphy being this unaware and inaccurate about our real lives to do this without malicious intent.
TopMob News contacted both Murphy and Netflix seeking their response to his recent comments, but we have yet to receive a reply from either party.
In the crime drama anthology series “Monsters,” which was co-created by Murphy and Ian Brennan, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch take on the roles of Lyle and Erik. Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny are cast as the siblings’ parents, portraying José Menendez and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez respectively.
In 1996, after two trials, the siblings were found guilty of premeditated murder and conspiring to commit murder and were sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison without any chance of parole, for the shotgun murders of their father and mother in their home in Beverly Hills from 1989.
It was suggested by prosecutors that Erik and Lyle committed the murders due to their ambition to claim the family wealth. However, the brothers contended that their parents had subjected them to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse for years, stating they acted out of fear and self-defense in response.
In 1996, after two separate trials, Erik and Lyle, aged 56 at the time, were found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiring to commit murder for the shotgun slayings of their parents in their Beverly Hills residence in 1989. The verdict led to a sentence of life imprisonment without the chance of parole for the two brothers.
It was suggested by prosecutors that Erik and Lyle committed the murders due to their wish to claim the family’s wealth. However, the siblings claimed that their parents had been physically, emotionally, and sexually abusive towards them for a prolonged period. Their defense team maintained that they defended themselves by killing their parents.
In a statement, Erik expressed regret that Netflix’s misleading representation of the crimes we faced has pushed back the truth about these tragedies, seemingly returning us to an old time when the legal system was built on the belief that men could not be sexually abused or traumatized by rape in the same way as women.
He went on to say, “For over twenty years, those despicable lies have been unmasked by countless brave individuals who set aside their personal embarrassment to speak out. As a result, Murphy crafts his sordid tale by creating vile and repulsive caricatures of Lyle and myself, as well as spreading disheartening slander.
Erik added that “violence is never an answer, never a solution, and is always tragic.”
So, let’s make sure we always remember this: hidden beneath the shine of glamour and sparkle are countless, unspoken atrocities when a child is subjected to violence. These grim scenes are seldom brought to light until they inflict pain on everyone connected.
