Richard Osman admits he’s written Thursday Murder Club movie joke into next book

As an ardent admirer of Richard Osman’s work, I find myself utterly enthralled by his latest revelation about Thursday Murder Club 5. The way he effortlessly weaves elements from the upcoming Netflix film into his writing is nothing short of remarkable. It’s as if he’s crafting a literary tapestry, stitching together threads from his real-life experiences on set with the fictional world he has so meticulously created.

It appears that Richard Osman’s upcoming novel will include a nod or inside joke related to the film adaptation of the Thursday Murder Club, as the author has recently confirmed.

In yesterday’s (September 21st’s) episode of Saturday Kitchen, Osman shared that some aspects of the upcoming Netflix movie have influenced his work on the fifth book in the celebrated series, which he is penning.

Osman told Matt Tebbutt that he has just begun reading “Thursday Murder Club 5,” meaning he’s only put “Thursday Murder Club 5” at the top of the book, which is essentially half the task, in reality.

It appears that Osman found himself envisioning the star-studded cast of the Netflix movie while writing, as he shared: “In fact, the initial time I was composing a scene with Ron, the Labour activist, Pierce Brosnan popped into my mind during the first paragraph. However, I reminded myself, ‘That’s not who he is. He’s a character residing in your thoughts.’

Since I immersed myself in filming during the summer, it became necessary for me to not dwell on the fact that Helen Mirren, Celia Imrie, and Pierce Brosnan, whom you’re familiar with, made up the cast.

He then added: “I do a little bit, where Ron and Ibrahim start the scene talking about who their favourite Bond is. And Ron says, ‘Oh, my favourite Bond is Pierce Brosnan’. And I told Pierce Brosnan about that, and yeah, he approved!”

Last week, it was officially announced that production on the Thursday Murder Club movie, helmed by director Chris Columbus, has been completed. Excited followers of the book series, who have eagerly anticipated seeing the Osman story unfold on the big screen, are now even more impatient for its release.

In this movie, you’ll find renowned actors such as Dame Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, and Sir Ben Kingsley playing the parts of four retirees who team up to investigate mysteries happening around their retirement community.

Apart from David Tennant, the movie’s cast also comprises Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Richard E Grant, Tom Ellis, Ingrid Oliver, and Jonathan Pryce. This implies an abundance of top-tier acting talent that promises an exciting viewing experience.

Last month, Osman playfully hinted that he’s begun drafting the fifth book in the Thursday Murder Club series by sharing an Instagram photo of his notebook, signaling the commencement of the writing journey.

As a passionate film buff, I’m thrilled to share that the franchise now boasts four captivating novels. Kicking off with Osman’s debut in 2020, we were introduced to an engrossing world, followed by The Man Who Died Twice in 2021. Fast forward to 2022, we delved deeper into the storyline with The Bullet That Missed, and most recently, in 2023, we encountered The Last Devil to Die. Each novel adds a new layer of intrigue, making this franchise a must-read for every avid reader!

The Thursday Murder Club is yet to confirm a release date.
