PlayStation Plus Subscribers Losing Free Access to Some of the Best PS3 Games

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with disappointment at the news that some beloved PS3 games are leaving the PS Plus library. I remember countless hours spent on LittleBigPlanet, crafting levels and sharing them with friends, and the intense battles in Ultra Street Fighter 4 that tested both my skills and patience.

It has been announced that PlayStation Plus subscribers will no longer have free access to two popular games on PS3. Despite its lower sales compared to the PS1, PS2, or PS4, and likely being outsold by the upcoming PS5, the PS3 was a low point for Sony initially, due to high sticker prices and late release compared to the Xbox 360. However, it managed to outperform its Xbox counterpart in sales, which is quite remarkable given that the Xbox 360 is Microsoft’s most successful console. One of the ways it recovered was by producing excellent software.

For those who have invested countless hours mastering Capcom’s Ultra Street Fighter 4 or gotten lost in time playing Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet, it may come as an unpleasant surprise to learn that these games will be removed from the libraries of PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium sometime in October, with October 15 being a likely date.

The duo of PS3 games is a part of a large departure of games, which also encompasses: Dragon Quest Builders, Dragon Quest Builders 2, Dragon Quest Heroes, Dragon Quest Heroes 2, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Gotham Knights, The Evil Within, and Toukiden Kiwami. In simpler terms, these PS3 games are among a significant number that are being released or made available.

If you haven’t encountered “LittleBigPlanet” before, it debuted in 2008 as the initial installment of a series that gained significant popularity. During the PlayStation 3 (PS3) era, this series played a crucial role for Sony. However, its relevance dwindled during the PlayStation 4 (PS4) era. Now, it holds little significance in the PlayStation 5 (PS5) era. Despite this, the first game was highly acclaimed, with a Metacritic score of 95 and often recognized as one of the best games ever made.

During the year 2014, there was an updated edition of the 2008 game, Street Fighter IV, called Ultra Street Fighter IV. This game was a significant release in the series and received a score of 94 on Metacritic. It is also recognized as one of the exceptional games from the PlayStation 3 era.
