Is The Penguin Giving Victor Zsasz a Brand New Origin?

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the introduction of Victor Zsasz in HBO’s The Penguin has me on the edge of my seat! The first episode’s intriguing setup hints at a fascinating character development for this iconic Batman villain.

As James Gunn focuses on expanding the new DC Universe, the Gotham City crafted by Matt Reeves in “The Batman” will remain independent from the main DC universe and serve as a standalone Elseworlds realm. This allows the creators of HBO’s “The Penguin” to explore their artistic freedom with the iconic characters inhabiting Gotham, including Sofia and Alberto Falcone. Other infamous Batman villains may also make an appearance in the series, though their identities remain undisclosed for now. The debut of “The Penguin,” released on Max on Thursday, appears to set the stage for the introduction of one such antagonist: Victor Zsasz.

Caution: This article unveils CRITICAL REVEALS from the initial episode of The Penguin. Proceed with caution, as you may wish to avoid if you prefer not to know the key plot points beforehand.

In the opening episode of “The Penguin“, set approximately three weeks following the occurrences in “The Batman“, character Oz (portrayed by Colin Farrell) encounters a situation in a district known as Crown Heights. When he discovers a band of youths attempting to steal wheels from his vehicle, he fires warning shots, effectively scaring them off and allowing him to apprehend one of the perpetrators.

In the premiere episode, Rhenzy Feliz portrays a character named Victor Aguilar. Although their surnames don’t align, the storyline suggests that Victor and another character, Oz, may share a bond reminiscent of Oz and the Penguin from the comics, as well as the TV series Gotham.

Victor Zsasz’s entire backstory revolves around him recklessly gambling away all his possessions, ultimately losing them all to the Penguin. This financial disaster leads to an enormous debt, which pushes him towards the brink of insanity. As he grapples with the emptiness of life and finds no purpose, he resorts to a chilling path as a serial killer.

It becomes evident after just one episode of “The Penguin” that the character Victor on the show is not at all similar to the Zsasz we’re familiar with. However, understanding his connection to Oz is crucial for speculating about his future actions. In a twist of events, Victor gets caught by Oz, and rather than resisting, he gives in and offers help to dispose of a body that had been hidden. Oz considers eliminating Victor, but instead decides to mentor him, using him as a driver and teaching him the basics of his growing criminal organization.

Victor is exceptionally kind-hearted compared to Oz, and he appears to be an authentic, decent child. However, he’s also distressed and isolated, and it seems like Oz might exploit this situation to mold him into a dedicated soldier in the future. By gradually eroding the positive aspects of Victor, pushing him towards thinking as a long-term Gotham criminal, Penguin could potentially breed a new monster that mirrors himself.

Over the coming weeks, there’ll be plenty of “The Penguin” around, and with so much uncertainty, who knows what might transpire. However, we can anticipate the arrival of major Batman antagonists. Victor Zsasz is now a figure of interest as the storyline progresses.
