How Transformers One Changes the Canon of Megatron and Decepticons

As a lifelong fan of the Transformers franchise, I must say that the new animated feature film “Transformers One” has truly taken me by surprise and left me utterly captivated. The fresh take on Megatron’s origin story and the Decepticons is nothing short of extraordinary, offering fans like myself a whole new perspective to sink our teeth into.

In the latest animated Transformers movie, there have been alterations to Megatron and the Decepticons’ backstory, paving the way for a fresh narrative for fans in the future. This new version of Transformers One presents Optimus Prime and Megatron in an entirely different light as the film delves deep into Cybertron’s past, even before the Autobots and Decepticons were at war. The movie unveils how these two leaders rose to power over time, introducing some intriguing character developments that promise to fuel larger conflicts ahead.

In the movie “Transformers One”, we learn about the early lives of Orion Pax and D-16, who will eventually become Optimus Prime and Megatron respectively. Unlike other versions of their origin stories, these two characters were not acquainted before they gained the ability to transform and fought as enemies later on. Instead, it’s their contrasting reactions to a series of significant revelations that sets them apart in this film. As the foundation of their beliefs is challenged, Megatron responds with fury and pain, which eventually causes the Decepticons to split apart.

How Megatron Becomes Megatron in Transformers One

As a die-hard fan, let me share my take on the captivating tale of “Transformers: One”. In this narrative, I join Orion Pax and D-16, diligent miners delving deep into the heart of Cybertron, relentlessly seeking Energon. We wholeheartedly believe our labor contributes positively to our planet’s wellbeing. However, a shocking truth surfaces: Sentinel Prime, our revered leader, has been on a secret quest all along—not for the restoration of Energon, as we were led to believe, but for the enigmatic Matrix of Leadership.

When Orion and D-16 learn about this revelation, their responses to the betrayal are distinct: Orion feels compelled to expose Sentinel Prime’s deceit to the entire planet and administer justice according to societal norms, while also seeking retribution. On the other hand, D-16 desires to eliminate Sentinel Prime for not just deceiving them, but also for misleading their lives since birth, effectively wasting their years of loyalty. As they gain the capacity to transform, D-16 becomes increasingly aggressive as his newfound power intensifies his thirst for revenge even further.

How the Decepticons are Formed in Transformers One

In this rephrased version: When D-16 manages to slay Sentinel Prime, he acquires Sentinel’s equipment, which was originally wielded by his hero Megatronus Prime. This act marks the transformation of D-16 into Megatron. With a destructive intent, Megatron and other Transformers who share his perspective (formerly part of the High Guard that were betrayed by the Primes) launch attacks on everyone and everything around them. Meanwhile, Orion Pax is bestowed with the Matrix of Leadership and assumes the title of Optimus Prime. The two then engage in a fierce battle.

After Megatron was subdued, Optimus expels him together with the High Guard. This intensifies Megatron’s fury even further. Choosing to label their group the Decepticons, symbolizing that they won’t tolerate deceit anymore, Megatron declares war on the remaining parts of the planet. In various versions of their backstory, Optimus and Megatron have had complex relationships; however, in _Transformers One_, they are portrayed as former best friends who drift apart due to life changes. This new perspective on their origins adds an extra layer of sadness when witnessing Megatron’s descent into rage.
