New PlayStation Rumor Could Point to the Existence of a PSP, PS Vita Successor

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear about potential new handheld consoles from Sony. The PSP and PS Vita were part of my youth, and the thought of a successor brings back memories of long bus rides and late-night gaming sessions.

There’s a buzz among PlayStation enthusiasts suggesting that Sony may soon unveil a successor to the PSP and PS Vita, a handheld device long-anticipated by fans. At present, speculation focuses on the upcoming PS5 Pro, set for release in November. Later down the line, many predict the arrival of the PlayStation 6, which seems likely to include backward compatibility. As for what lies beyond the PS6 and any other potential projects from Sony, details remain vague. However, recent developments point towards two new platforms being developed by the company.

According to leaks from KeplerL2 on NeoGaf, Sony appears to be developing two distinct system-on-a-chip (SoC) units. In simpler terms, this means Sony is creating two unique pieces of hardware that differ in some way. It’s likely that one of these SoCs will power the PlayStation 6, but the other’s purpose remains vague. One possibility is a less powerful version of the PS6 similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Series S. Alternatively, it might be a handheld console designed to work alongside or independently from the PS6.

If you’re uncertain about Sony re-entering the handheld market with force, here are two compelling arguments to consider. Firstly, the PlayStation Portal has thrived since its launch in 2023, becoming a significant achievement for Sony. Remarkably, the PS5 accessory has outperformed Sony’s initial expectations, demonstrating that there is a strong demand from their user base for handheld devices.

The second point is that there’s been a significant resurgence in handheld gaming devices across various brands in recent years. For instance, Nintendo has its Switch consoles, while Valve has the Steam Deck. In fact, it’s been more than a decade since we last saw such a strong market for handhelds. Given this trend, it’s not surprising that Sony, which initially entered the market with the PSP in 2005, is looking to re-enter and claim a share of this revitalized sector.

Although it’s only speculation at this point, it’s important to clarify that all information presented here should be viewed as rumors. It’s highly likely that Sony is exploring various options for its upcoming console, and these decisions are far from final. The possibility of a revival of PlayStation handheld devices around the release of the PS6 has become more plausible than it was a decade ago, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
