After a long court battle with her former son-in-law, Michael Cardwell, a 44-year-old woman has been granted custody of her 12-year-old granddaughter Kailtyn following the unfortunate demise of her daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell in December 2023 due to stage 4 adrenal carcinoma.
In a turn of events, Michael, who isn’t biologically related to Kaitlyn and started dating Anna when she was 8 months old, applied for custody of Kaitlyn after Anna passed away. However, court documents acquired by People reveal that Mama June was given custody instead, as the Georgia judge concluded that Michael hadn’t offered “substantial financial assistance” towards Kaitlyn for the past year.
The court records indicate that a family counselor stated that Kaitlyn is anxious about being separated from Mama June and has expressed a wish to continue living with her grandmother instead.
In the case at hand, it’s stated that Michael, who is the father of Anna’s youngest child, Kylee (age 8), doesn’t have the authority to visit Kaitlyn unless both Mama June and Kaitlyn consent to it, as per the court decision.
According to court papers acquired by InTouch magazine, Mama June claimed that Michael was abusive towards Anna during their time as a married couple.
Michael’s legal representative refuted the claims, issuing a statement to InTouch, explaining, “Michael rejects these accusations. It is the first instance that such allegations have been leveled against him. During their marriage, Michael and Anna shared a strong bond, but they eventually parted ways due to disagreements in views and personalities.
Before she passed away, Anna made it clear that she wanted Eldridge Toney, whom she started dating in 2017 following her divorce from Michael, to be granted custody of both of her daughters once they got married in March 2023.
In an episode of their show, Mama June expressed that Kaitlyn would benefit more from her care due to stability. However, Eldridge has been part of Kaitlyn’s life since she was about 5 years old. In essence, it might be beneficial for the situation to be clearly documented.
