Marvel Rivals Is Adding a Surprising Version of Psylocke

As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for Marvel characters and a deep affection for Psylocke, this recent development in Marvel Rivals has me thoroughly excited! I’ve seen many iterations of Psylocke over the years, but Sai, an alternate universe take on the character, feels like a fresh breath of air.

In a recent development, game developer NetEase Games, creators of Marvel Rivals, unveiled Psylocke as a fresh playable character. This disclosure happened on the Marvel Rivals Discord server over the weekend, post a trivia contest. A unique angle to this reveal is that the character isn’t Betsy Braddock or even Kwannon, who are known X-Men members. Instead, it’s Sai, a Psylocke variant from an alternate universe that made its debut in Demon Days: X-Men. This particular version was conceptualized by Peach Momoko, and her artistic influence is evident in the sneak peek we have seen thus far.

To date, the response to Psylocke’s design has been predominantly favorable, with many fans expressing their excitement on various social media platforms. At present, NetEase has not disclosed much additional information about Psylocke or her gameplay mechanics. Here’s hoping that this means we’ll soon receive a gameplay trailer, providing more insights. The one definitive detail is that Sai will be voiced in the game by Alpha Takahashi. Following a hint from the Marvel Rivals X/Twitter account, Takahashi posted “can you guess who’s joining the Marvel Universe.” This voice actor has previously worked on games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield, and Killer Instinct.

Psylocke has a rich history in video gaming, featuring as a playable character in games like Marvel vs. Capcom and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Interestingly, these iterations were modeled after the Betsy Braddock variant of the character, but it’s logical for Sai to appear in Marvel Rivals given the multiverse element in its storyline. We’ve already witnessed other alternate versions of characters, such as Peni Parker, so this Psylocke adaptation fits quite well. With Psylocke’s complex background, this version could potentially spark renewed interest in Demon Days and possibly see it appear in additional media!
