Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez Reunite in Dark Horse's FML First Look Preview (Exclusive)

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast who’s seen it all, from pixelated adventures to the mighty Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can confidently say that FML is a fresh, electrifying addition to the comic book scene. With its gritty realism, heavy metal roots, and a dash of magical realism, this series promises to be a rollercoaster ride that’ll keep me on the edge of my seat.

Enthusiasts have long anticipated the collaboration between Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez on a fresh project since their joint work on Captain Marvel, and now that moment has arrived with their self-produced venture for Dark Horse Comics titled “FML.” In this series, we follow the life of a 16-year-old heavy metal enthusiast named Riley and his friends as they encounter the realms of magic and gods, which drastically alter their existence. We are offering you an exclusive sneak peek at the series! DeConnick pens the script, while Lopez handles the illustrations, with Cris Peter responsible for colors and Clayton Cowles taking care of lettering. Our comprehensive preview on the next slide provides a glimpse into Riley’s family life, his heavy metal background, and the perils he encounters.

What Is FML About?

Riley, a 16-year-old heavy metal enthusiast, uses a ballpoint pen to calm his anxiety. His mother is an aging punk artist with a passion for true crime and slam dancing. Through the lens of magical realism, they both navigate the absurdities and terrors of contemporary life.

In the first issue, we delve into Riley’s daily struggles: fears of terrorism, school shootings, and societal pressures, all under the ominous threat of wildfires that occasionally drop ash like a grim snowfall. His sanctuary? The Witch’s House in Forest Park, where stories of chaos magic and trickster deities offer some understanding in an uncomprehending world.

A Long-Awaited Reunion

David and I have been discussing a collaborative creator-owned project since the release of Captain Marvel, but it wasn’t until recently that our schedules and circumstances finally aligned perfectly. Now that we’re here, it seems as if this collaboration was destined to happen – like we needed just the right amount of time to grow and evolve, both personally and professionally, so we could come together for this ambitious project.
