As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the upcoming sequel to GreedFall has truly piqued my interest. The blend of action RPG elements, diplomacy, and stealth mechanics is reminiscent of some of my favorite titles from yesteryears.
Following the unexpected triumph of GreedFall in the year 2019, Spiders returns with GreedFall 2: The Dying World. Rather than a full release, they are choosing an early access period commencing September 24th for PC at $39.99 (with the price set to rise later). Intrigued? Let’s delve into 15 essential insights about GreedFall 2 before you decide to play it.
Available Regions
In essence, early access grants players a substantial chunk (about 30%) of the complete game to delve into. According to its Steam description, it encompasses the start of the main storyline. Players will traverse through three distinct areas – Teer Fradee, Thynia, and Uxantis, each offering unique quests. The initial six characters are part of this exploration, with additional companions being introduced as the early access progresses.
Character Customization
Initially in this journey, you’ll have the freedom to personalize your character’s features such as gender, voice, complexion, hairstyle, and hair color. Currently, there are several pre-set options available, but as the early access phase continues, Spiders will expand these choices.
Skills
In the upcoming release, classes are making a comeback, although Spiders has yet to delve into specifics about each class. However, it has hinted at various playstyles, ranging from melee combatants (warriors), chemical experts (alchemists), and mechanical masters (engineers) to those who prefer casting spells. When early access begins, there will be six skill trees to explore.
So far, the choices available are Reinforcement, which amplifies the damage you inflict and restores a portion of your health, and Power Shot, a long-range attack that deals four times your weapon’s physical or magical damage. You can opt for defensive and aid-focused abilities, bows, destructive capabilities, and even Teer Fradeean Braces. The choices are adjustable, providing room for exploration and testing different strategies.
Attributes
In addition to allocating Skill Points to acquire new abilities, you may also distribute points into attributes such as Strength, Agility, Perception, Intellect, Constitution, and Focus. The advantages of these attributes vary based on your playstyle – Intellect enhances the damage dealt by bound gear and magical armor protection per level, while Constitution boosts maximum health and resistance to various status ailments. However, these attributes also have levels that increase with investment. For example, at the Novice level for Constitution, you will unlock 100% of the armor on bound equipment, and at the Master level, you become immune to movement effects.
Companions
In the sequel to “GreedFall,” there’s a strong focus on the game’s diverse companions, one of whom is Nilan, a native of Teer Fradee who shares a history with the main character and exhibits traits such as stubbornness and awkwardness, yet remains deeply connected to the land. Fausta, originally from Thélème, adapts her demeanor based on those she encounters, demonstrating exceptional skills in diplomacy.
Sybille is connected to de Vespe (as seen in the DLC of GreedFall 1), and despite her initial caution towards strangers, she’s strongly committed to her companions. Meanwhile, Alvida stands firm in her beliefs while following the Naut’s way, demonstrating an iron will. Lastly, Ludwig is a sarcastic ex-soldier who denies heroism and resists being depicted as one according to the developers, suggesting some intriguing complexities.
Companion Skill Trees
Beyond that, you’ll find that each of your companions has their own set of skill progressions. Some of these abilities may coincide with the protagonist’s skills, but they also have exclusive options. For instance, Nilan can develop talents in Archery and Support Paths alongside Nilan’s own Path. More information is forthcoming, but it’s clear that tailoring your companions’ playstyles can enhance your overall gameplay experience.
Tactical and Real-Time Combat
In contrast to its predecessor, which was based on real-time gameplay, GreedFall 2 introduces a Tactical Pause mode. This feature enables players to plan and execute skills and actions in advance, providing a broader perspective of the battlefield. While all characters can be manually controlled, you also have the option to let AI handle them during real-time combat.
Action Points and Orders
Absolutely, during battle, you have the option to give commands to your allies, which uses up Action Points. This is particularly useful for synchronizing attacks, identifying threats, or using tactical advantages such as explosive barrels and high ground to inflict damage. Although Action Points regenerate with regular attacks, they can also be replenished through resting or drinking potions.
Crafting
Through exploration (which Survival skills may aid), you can discover different resources to create potions useful for healing. Additionally, there are items available that restore magic deflection points, offer a bit of armor protection, or even set up lethal traps causing effects such as Bleed, Poison, Curse, and so forth. At present, the range of options appears extensive, but it seems weapon and armor crafting will be expanded in the future.
Equipment
In terms of gear, there are spaces for you to equip capes, necklaces, rings, boots, chest armor, gloves, and various other items. This gear can enhance your physical defense and magical protection while providing extra benefits such as increased chances of critical hits, damage output, and resistance to status ailments. As for weapons, you can choose from rifles, claymores, sabers, morning stars, axes, and many others, each with their unique advantages. Both the gear and weapons have different rarities, including Common, Uncommon, and Rare variants.
Diplomacy and Stealth
You don’t always have to go blow-for-blow with everyone you meet. Diplomacy is just as important given the various warring factions, with a chance to succeed indicated next to key decisions. Players also have options for stealth, as exemplified in a prison escape scene, and lock-picking, with the freedom to specialize in the same (though, once again, we’re yet to see exactly how).
Choices and Consequences
Absolutely, every choice and action you take has consequences that may influence various groups and their opinions towards you. It’s uncertain at this point how these decisions will impact your relationships with companions, but they could bring you closer or turn them into adversaries depending on your choices.
Difficulty Options
In case the battles become excessively challenging in GreedFall 2, you can adjust the difficulty settings for a more tailored experience. There are three main modes: Story, Normal, and Difficult. Additionally, there’s an “Untouchable” option that makes all damage inflicted on your character zero. You can also independently modify Team Damage and Recovery as well as enemy damage. However, the predefined modes come with their own configurations for AI hostility and enemy quantities.
PC Requirements
When the early access launches, every setup will necessitate Windows 10, DirectX 12, and approximately 30 gigabytes of installation space. To meet the minimum requirements for a 1080p/30 FPS experience at Low settings, you’ll need an Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a graphics card such as Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or the AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8 GB.
The suggested hardware specifications encompass a Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 5 5600x CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and either an RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB or Radeon 6700XT 12 GB graphics card. This setup ensures a smooth gaming experience at 1080p resolution with 60 frames per second, running on High graphic settings. Keep in mind that while the performance might improve over time, your saved games won’t transfer between updates.
Early Access Roadmap
Despite not setting a specific timeline for early access, Spiders has outlined an initial plan. This autumn will bring about a new companion and quests, a fresh region and central hub, as well as two new skill trees and additions to the main story. Winter, in turn, is expected to introduce another companion, more companion quests, regional quests in Teer Fradee and Uxantis, a third skill tree and abilities, and a new crafting system (though details about how it will expand upon the existing one are yet to be revealed).
The programmer will proceed by enhancing various features as well as expanding the primary storyline, with intentions to unveil additional faction missions, a higher character level limit, a Photo Mode, among other things. Throughout this process, Spiders is dedicated to making balance adjustments and addressing community suggestions, which may involve incorporating fresh content.
