Iron Man's Jeff Bridges Makes a Promising Tease About an MCU Return

As a gamer with a vast collection of Marvel-themed action figures and an even vaster library of MCU movies, I have to say that Jeff Bridges‘ tease about his return as Obadiah Stane has me absolutely thrilled! Growing up, I remember watching Iron Man back in 2008 and being captivated by the epic battle between Tony Stark and the Iron Monger. The idea of seeing Obadiah Stane return to the MCU, whether it be a flashback or a multiverse variant, is just too tantalizing for words!

Actor Jeff Bridges, who played the antagonist Obadiah Stane in the Iron Man movie, might have hinted at his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a recent interview. In the first MCU film, Obadiah Stane was instrumental in transforming Stark Industries into a powerful corporation with Howard Stark. When Tony Stark created the Iron Man armor, Stane developed the menacing Iron Monger armor using Tony’s initial prototype. During their final confrontation in Los Angeles (known as the “Duel of Los Angeles”), it appeared that Stane was killed when his prototype arc reactor exploded beneath him, causing him to fall into and detonate the reactor itself. However, Bridges’ recent comments may suggest a possible resurrection or return for his character.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have maintained a glimmer of anticipation that the character Obadiah Stane might make a return in a manner reminiscent of comic books. His supposed death and the subsequent cover story surrounding it could potentially be disproven by an unexpected comeback. With the Iron Man segment of the MCU poised for a revamp through upcoming projects such as the Ironheart TV series and Armor Wars films, this moment seems ideal for Obidiah Stane to reappear on the scene.

During a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jeff Bridges hinted at a possibility for Obadiah or any other multiverse version of him to reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He suggested that since it’s all science fiction, there might be chances for him to resurface again in the future. Interestingly, he also mentioned that an early draft of the Iron Man script had already established such a scenario for his character.

In the script I studied before filming, Obadiah Stane ends up falling into a vat, but when I watched the final version, it was shown that the armor was opened without me (Obadiah Stane) inside.

Jon Favreau, the director of Iron Man, didn’t actually film that particular scene from Iron Man, but there’s a chance a future Marvel Cinematic Universe project could unveil it as a surprising flashback twist. It would be intriguing to learn more about what Obadiah Stane has been doing since the events of Iron Man, especially considering the revelation that the Ten Rings organization was not what it appeared to be.

In another possible turn of events, a character similar to Obadiah Stane from a different Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) dimension could show up in an upcoming MCU Multiverse Saga project. This has fans buzzing with excitement at the prospect of Guillaume Bridges and Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man together, sharing the screen again. In Avengers: Doomsday, Downey’s character Doctor Doom poses a threat to the entire MCU Multiverse. It would be intriguing to see Bridges’ Stane take on a distinct role in this new reality, perhaps as a heroic industrialist (like Iron Man?) contrasting with Downey’s villainous portrayal.

It appears that Bridges showed enthusiasm over Downey’s Marvel Cinematic Universe comeback, expressing, “But he’s portraying a villain! That’s awesome!” So, one can only speculate…

Iron Man is now streaming on Disney+.
